Since its establishment in 1968, L’Espresso has earned a reputation as the destination for elegant teatime pursuits. In particular, the English Afternoon Tea buffet available daily at this cosy restaurant is the main attraction with a dazzling assortment of dainty sandwiches, salads, savouries, pastries, desserts, chocolate fountain and of course, traditional English scones.

Now, afternoon tea aficionados will have more reason to indulge as L’Espresso has updated its English Afternoon Tea menu with more delightful nibbles while keeping popular signatures such as scones and finger sandwiches. Aunty and I had an enjoyable time at L’Espresso a few weeks back.

The afternoon tea has a charcuterie selection including flavoursome cuts such as German Black Forest ham and Rosette salami, while Duck rillette and homemade dips such as Mushroom and Tomato, are perfect with the freshly baked bread selection such as focaccia and ciabatta.

Something new is the Hot smoked salmon with horseradish cream and crusted with herbs and breadcrumbs. With freshly made breads like wholemeal, white and croissants to choose from, we are spoilt for choice with L’Espresso’s popular finger sandwiches and tantalising fillings such as turkey ham with dried pear and celery, egg and tomato with Swiss bacon, grilled eggplant, zucchini and red capsicum with pesto, tuna mayonnaise with celery, semi-dried tomato with Emmental cheese, spicy crabmeat salad with tobiko, chicken ham with portobello mushroom, smoked pork kassler with melted onions, smoked chicken with tomato and lettuce.

The mini open-faced sandwiches offers interesting flavours like slow-cooked farm chicken in crêpe, roast beef with cornichons, smoked salmon with beetroot mousse and caviar, poached prawn with pineapple and avocado salsa (I like!), rie with grape on maple crostini, icoise tartlet with tuna tataki etc. They also have foie gras terrine with coated pistachios and cranberry compote!

Being a huge fan for scones, I got excited just by the sight of it. They are freshly baked in the open-concept kitchen behind the buffet counter. There are plain, blueberry and raspberry scones are available, along with assorted jams, Devonshire clotted cream and butter. I was hoping for more flavours from them though.

My favourite is the simmering Braised kurobuta pork in hot pot served with Hungarian sweet paprika brioche. It is such a comforting dish that I had 5 brioche at one go! There are also popular staples like mini fish goujons with goma dressing; chicken karaage, lasagnette with ratatouille; shepherd’s pie and slow roasted tomato tart with thyme and crumbled feta.

The L’Espresso afternoon tea experience is not complete without its signature desserts. Perennial favourites like bread and butter pudding with vanilla sauce; crème brûlée; silky vanilla and orange panna cotta; chestnut cherry slice; earl grey cake; passionfruit meringue tartlet and orange chiboust frangipan are available. New in the buffet is tiramisu; Mango yogurt dream and Sago Gula Melaka. You can also enjoy a range of ice creams, French pastries and fresh fruit.

Chocolate fans can make a beeline for this chocolate section. Highlights include a chocolate fountain with seasonal fruit skewers and marshmallows; a trio of chocolate mousse; dulcey chocolate brownie; chocolate crunchy hazelnut dome as well as assorted pralines and truffles.

The buffet is priced at S$45 per adult and S$22.50 per child daily; it includes two servings of coffee and tea from a selection of premium coffee and TWG tea. If guests fancy some tipple to perk up their afternoon, they can choose to have their high tea with a glass of Laurent-Perrier champagne at S$68 per adult, or top up with a bottle of the same champagne at S$125.

Dining indoors is an enjoyable experience with comfortable leather sofas and the floor-to-ceiling glass windows which provide plenty of natural lighting and a pretty view of the hotel’s main pool. With the stylish open-concept kitchen, we can also watch the chefs at work preparing some of the buffet items.
