Grin Affair: Interior

Tucked away under a HDB block at Everton Park, Grin Affair serves cakes in glass jars. Opened by young entrepreneur and salt taught baker, Jody Ang, she wanted to use reusable carriers so she thought of glass jars – something solid and substantial which adds to the experience. Especially when they are so many cafes coming out in Singapore, this “cake in a jar” concepts is a unique concept.

Grin Affair: Menu

All 12 flavours offered at Grin Affair are displayed on their decorated boards in the shop, giving a very homey and rustic feel to the customer. Many get sold out pretty quickly so you might want to get in early if you have specific preference. They also have unique flavours based on seasonal fruits.

Grin Affair: Strawberry

Fresh ingredients of fruits, cakes and nuts are used in each cake. We had one of the best sellers, Strawberry ($5.50), which has layers of vanilla cake, strawberry slices with custard mousse and drizzled with some strawberry coulis. I love this because the cake is light and refreshing! The custard made the strawberries less sourish. My only gripe was that the strawberries were too icy that day.

Grin Affair: Marron

For chestnut cream and chocolate lovers, this is the business! Marron ($5.50) combines baked crust, chestnut mousse, coffee cake with a chestnut on top – a gloriously decadent treat. They make their own chestnut puree so it’s less sweet. This cake brings out the best of a chestnut´s flavor and fragrance. I thought replacing coffee cake with vanilla cake may be another alternative because it is lighter and we can hence taste the sweetness from the chestnut mousse. But either way, I enjoyed it!

Grin Affair: Coconut Cream Cheese

A good harmony of coconut-ty cream cheese, fresh pineapples and vanilla sponge cake, topped with their homemade pineapple tart at the top, Coconut Cream Cheese ($6.50) is indeed an unqiue creation.

Grin Affair: Durian

Durian lovers should never miss their Durian flavour ($5.50) where they only use mao shan wang durian, layered with baked crust, durian mousse, vanilla cake and a dollop of fresh durian on top. The durian taste is very rich and it made me crave for more. Especially with the dollop of fresh durian on top, remember to sink your spoon right to the bottom, the baked crust provides a nice crunchy surprise.

Cake in a jar is definitely an interesting concept and it makes me less guilty when I finish the whole jar. Their sponge cake is really light. Small dessert spoons are provided, making it a breeze to consume the cakes straight from the jars. Each jar is covered with pretty recyclable paper and string.

Grin Affair encourages people to return the jars if they do takeaway, so they came up with the ticket system. Each dessert already comes with one ticket, but if you do takeaway and you return the jar to us, you get another ticket. The tickets can then be used to redeem goodies. They provide carrier to 4 jars and above.
