Happy Dōngzhì Festival!

The Dōngzhì Festival or Winter Solstice Festival (Chinese: 冬至) is one of the most important festivals celebrated by the Chinese and celebrated on or around December 22 when sunshine is weakest and daylight shortest.

Traditionally, the Dongzhi Festival is also a time for the family to get together. The one activity my family do together is to make and eat tangyuan (汤圆) or balls of glutinuous rice, which symbolize reunion.
The tangyuan are made of glutinuous rice flour and we only do two colours: white and orange. They are either plain or stuffed with crushed peanuts (which we grind ourself) and they are cooked in a sweet soup (using orange sugar). Each of us will have at least one large tangyuan in addition to several small ones, because the one symbolises that we have grown one year older.

But I always wanted to count them as though I am counting the birthday candles (so that I can eat more). Since I am 25 this year, I will eat 1 big one and 15 small ones! YAY!

I went to work later today because I wanted to stay at home to help in the tang yuan making process, but in the end I was too busy snapping the photos! And this is what I had after I came home from work. Yes, we don’t cook with ginger soup, but we used orange sugar!
