Located just beside Zouk, at Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel along Havelock Road, Nanjya Monjya’s specialty is Okonomiyaki. It a Japanese savoury pancake containing a variety of ingredients. The name is derived from the word okonomi, meaning “what you like” or “what you want”, and yaki meaning “grilled” or “cooked”.

I got to know this place from a reader 3 years ago. When I came on my own for a meal then, I was really shocked by the menu as majority of it was written in Japanese. This time I am back at Nanjya Monjya again to celebrate Missuschewy’s and Pei Rong’s birthday. The first question I asked when making reservation was,”Is your menu still written in Japanese?” Thankfully the answer was no, as they have got it printed nicely and with pictures as well.

The only other famous restaurant famous for okonomiyaki (that I know of) is Botejyu. But in Botejyu, you are sitted comfortably on the table and they will serve you the ready made okonomiyaki. Here at Nanjya Monjya, your experience is enhanced by doing it on your own!

In Nanjya Monjya, you have to DIY your own okonomiyaki. There are more than 20 different flavours, so you can pick what you like and will be given a bowl of raw ingredients where you can mix and grill at tables fitted with teppan. We ordered a seafood ($21) and pork ($17) version. Each okonomiyaki is packed full of ingredients. If it’s your first time, get the staff to help you with it. If you prefer a wetter version, go for monjyayaki.

In addition, they have a good variety of appetizers and one of the recommended one is their Spicy Mentaiko Cheese Tofu ($18) and juicy Yaki Gyoza ($12). It is a pretty view to dine at Nanjya Monjya at night (if you are seated outdoor). Note of warning, if you are going to sit inside, be prepared to go home with a smoky head.
