The Soup Spoon
Having a bowl of warm soup is a luxury on a cold rainy day. At The Soup Spoon, where soup takes the central stage, cold will definitely go away.

The Soup Spoon has 8 different soups on the menu — from the traditional soups such as Boston Clam Chowder, Beef Goulash, Roasted Pumpkin and Meatless Minestrone to the unique creations such as Tokyo Chicken Stew, Tangy Tomato With Basil and Velvety Mushroom Stroganoff.

An average man needs around 2,500 calories a day to maintain his weight. For an average woman, that figure is around 2,000 calories a day. Most restaurants in Singapore don’t display the calorific and nutritional value of the food they sell. But in The Soup Spoon, each soup has a calorie calculation with Roasted Pumpkin soup having the lowest calories (130 calories) and Boston Clam Chowder with the highest (425 calories). The menu also describes the ingredients and the soup character, such as gluten-free or dairy-free.

The Soup Spoon
Velvety Mushroom Stroganoff (Vegetarian/Dairy/Gluten), $7.30
Calorie Count: 252

A simple and rich mushroom soup! The soup is overpowered with the aroma of mushrooms, dip their selection of bread into the bowl of soup, smooth and comforting to the stomach.

The Soup Spoon
Tangy Tomato with Basil (Vegetarian/Dairy/Gluten), $6.10
Calorie Count: 266

A vegetarian puree of roasted tomatoes and basil, the tomatoes are freshly roasted and blended. It is, not surprisingly, an acquired taste — it starts out slightly sweet, smooth and tangy but leaves a somewhat spicy tinge in the mouth.

The Soup Spoon
Beside serving soup, The Soup Spoon also offers various sandwiches, fresh salads, wraps and side dishes.

Thai Chicken Vermicilli ($8.30) is ideal for a busy weeknight. Lemongrass Chicken, Vermicilli, Water Chestnut, Celery, Coriander, Carrot, Cherry Tomato and Snow Pea Sprout are tossed with a refreshing sauce. The vermicelli is such a big portion that I think it can be eaten as a main, rather than a side. But warn you, the sourish taste is not suitable for the weak stomach!

The Soup Spoon
These Smoked Salmon Sandwiches ($9.90) model the classic combination of Tartare Sauce and smoked salmon. Accessorized with capers, lemon and black pepper, it’s simple and classic.

The Soup Spoon
We thought we were served with crab stick wrap but when I sliced it opened, I found 6 big sized fresh prawns in the Indochine Prawn Wrap ($9.90). Succulent Kaffir lime prawns are wrapped with coriander, Water Chestnut, cucumber and many other vegetables, and drizzled with peanut sesame dressing. The result is a very filling, flavorful wrap.

The Soup Spoon
Braised Chicken with Wolfberries and Daun Salam (Chicken/Gluten/Dairy Free), $7.60
Calorie Count: 251

My gluttony friends commented that this soup has a familiar taste. I guess it is because wolfberries and red dates are used widely in Asian cooking, while daun salam and chillies are used in Malay/Indonesian dishes, when mixed together, you get something familiar, yet unique.

The Soup Spoon
French Ratatouille (Vegetarian/Cream 1%/Gluten/Egg Free), $6.80
Calorie Count: 175

As always, the quality of the ingredients determines how good the soup will taste. A blend of vividly colored vegetables such as potatoes, carrots, french beans, eggplant, cauliflower, zucchini, peas and tomatoes will produce a beautiful vegetable stew of unrivalled quality. You may like to add some sour cream to go with it, but I think drinking the stew itself is good enough.

The Soup Spoon
A Mild Summer Night’s Beef Stew (Beef/Dairy Free/Gluten/Egg Free), $7.90
Calorie Count: 366

I love this soup the most. It was created to commemorate the opening of the Ion Orchard outlet in 2009. The hearty beef is coaxed with fresh herbs, wine, tomatoes and white beans, giving it a rich, thick and gorgeous red hue. Drizzled with sundered tomato olive oil and parsley flakes, I need some beer!

The Soup Spoon
In case you are new to The Soup Spoon, it is a Singapore-based restaurant chain started by a trio of soup loving entrepreneurs. They have a total of 11 restaurants in Singapore, with the Tiong Bahru Plaza and Marina Bay Link Mall as two of the newest outlets.
