Hidden amongst a row of shophouses at Upper Thomson, WORD. café has a unique exterior design that replicates a container. The food is served in a rustic-chic space with warm wood accents. Started by the founders of Hello Soda SG, this Muslim-owned café plays on words for the names of their food items such as Lett-uce Feed You which is a salad dish and Blur Like Sotong, a fried calamari side dish.

For their Lepak Bites (starter), Cut The Crab ($15) is crabcakes served with a mildly spicy mayo dip. Surprisingly, the crabcakes were not as dry as I thought. It was still moist and filled with the savoury taste of the crabmeat that they’ve used. However, it was a tad too salty so the dip was not necessary.

On the other hand, Magic Mushrooms ($10) were really juicy such that taking a bite in it would result in explosion of the mushroom juice. The batter was not too thick, and you could still enjoy the natural sweetness of the mushroom.

For the mains, we were recommended to Salmon Khan ($18) and Cow-ch Potato ($24). Salmon Khan is pan fried salmon served with vegetables and potato puree. The salmon was fresh and well-cooked with crispy skin on the outside and moist on the inside.

The Cow-ch Potato was an interesting play with words as the fillet steak sits upon the potato puree. The doneness of the steak (medium) was just right, and the moisture was kept within the steak making it so succulent.

The potato puree served in both dishes, was really creamy with a mild peppery taste, and the texture of the puree was very smooth. You simply can’t stop after one mouth.

WORD. café is a great place to chill out, as it is not crowded so you could pop by to try out their drinks if you’re not hungry. Their WORD. Concoction ($7) is an interesting mix of ice-cream soda, lemongrass, sour plum, lemon and mint. The blend of sweet and sour with the aromatic lemongrass really quenches the thirst for a hot day in Singapore. The Yakult Banana ($7) tasted more like banana milkshake as the banana may have overpower the grape-flavored yakult.
