You know how it is when you have a movie to catch at night and we need to have dinner first? Or you just want to have something fuss-free before your next meeting? The trick is to grab something easy to eat and to make that quick meal just as enjoyable, have it with Coca-Cola. It makes food tastes better and that ice-cold sensation refreshes you and gets your senses ready for the next movie. I have sourced for 10 quick bites in Ang Mo Kio Central. Some of them are new, while some of them have been a household brand already. Check them out if you are nearby!

Yuen Long Hong Kong Pastry & Buns Address: Blk 709 Ang Mo Kio Ave 8 #01-2585

Ang Mo Kio Central Food: Yuen Long Hong Kong Pastry & Buns

Ang Mo Kio Central Food: Polo Char Siew Bun

Ang Mo Kio Central Food: Salted Egg Bun

If you are a lover for Hong Kong pastries, you will love Yuen Long like me. It is always long queue in the Ang Mo Kio branch (there are many other branches including People’s Park Complex). They sell a good range of pastries like the wife cake, egg tart, char siew sou, egg custard bun etc.

Must try their Polo Char Siew Bun ($1.30) which has an excellent crispy and buttery crust. Once you take a bite, you will be greeted with juicy honey roasted char siew. We also like the Salted Egg Bun ($1.30) with overflowing salted egg within the bun. Hold it carefully, and try not to squeeze the bun.

Prata Raya Address: AMK Hub #01-38/39 (next to Burger King and taxi stand)

AMK Hub Food: Prata Raya

AMK Hub Food: Prata Raya's roti prata

Prata Raya is the revamped version of Ah Mei Café. Apparently, they have changed AMK Hub’s and Thomson Plaza’s outlet to Prata Raya. It used to be on the 2nd floor of AMK Hub, but now they are just beside the taxi stand with a much more comfortable space.

Their prata is not the crispy type, more towards the buttery and chewy texture. The pratas are made ala minute and there is barely a glisten of grease on our plates. The prata goes well with their thick chicken curry which has a hint of sweetness. This is the place to satisfy a late night prata craving. It opens till 2am on Friday and Saturday. So when we finished a movie at Cathay @ AMK Hub, we would always hang out at Prata Raya.

Yishun 925 Hainanese Chicken Rice Address: Blk 722 Ang Mo Kio Ave 8

Ang Mo Kio Central Food: Yishun 925 Hainanese Chicken Rice

Same stall as Tip Top curry puff, is Yishun 925 Hainanese Chicken Rice. This chicken rice is very famous in Yishun, I was really happy when I knew that they have set up a branch in Ang Mo Kio. It is quite easy to spot them because the meatless chickens are all hanging on the display window. I really like their tender chicken meat which is already deboned when served on the table. The rice is not too oily but has a nice fragrance. The chilli and ginger sauces were decent, like home-made style.

Gourmet Pizza to go Address: AMK MRT Station

Ang Mo Kio Central Food: Gourmet Pizza to go

Ang Mo Kio Central Food: Gourmet Pizza to go

Ang Mo Kio MRT Station has finished its renovation with more F&B offerings within the premise. One of them is Gourmet Pizza To Go, an innovative concept for a pizza al taglio fast to serve and to eat, without getting down on quality. This looks like a place that will serve you fancy gourmet pizzas with crazy ingredients, but it is not.

The pizzas here are humble and homely, with classic flavours like hawaiian, pepperoni, Italian, BBQ Chicken, vegetarian and more. I ordered a 1 person portion with a slice of pizza, 4 pcs nuggets and a cup of Coke. The BBQ Chicken pizza appealed to me because I do love my meat with mozzarella and cheddar cheese. It turned out to be a right balance of sweet and salty, on a bed of pillowy dough.

Tip Top Curry Puff Address: Blk 722 Ang Mo Kio Ave 8 #01-2843

Ang Mo Kio Central Food: Tip Top Curry Puff Ang Mo Kio Central Food: Tip Top Curry Puff

There are many stalls in Ang Mo Kio famous for their curry puffs. Even though we didn’t like the fact that Tip Top has transferred its ownership to ABR Holdings (which also own Swensens) and the standard is not as great as before, I would still drop by once in a while as the flavour brings back so much childhood memories. I really grew up eating Tip Top. During my school days where I had tuition nearby, we would sometimes grab a curry puff and a drink for lunch. The crust still remains crispy and I always look forward to biting onto the juicy chicken chunks and egg.

Fried Hokkien Prawn Noodle Address: Blk 724 Ang Mo Kio Central Food Centre #01-38 Ang Mo Kio Central Food: Fried Hokkien Prawn Noodle

Not the most prominent stall in the hawker centre, but definitely one of the must-tries in this area. Especially when I am catching a late night movie in Ang Mo Kio, I would always drop by here for a plate of hokkie mee first before going to the cinema. The owners have replaced thick bee hoon with thinner version. Together with yellow noodles, they are nicely braised in flavorful prawn broth and cooked with egg, pork belly, sotong and prawns to enhance the flavor.

The noodles have absorbed the flavour of the fragrant soup. Opeh leaf is only available for take-away (from $4 onwards). Be sure to grab more sambal chilli and slice lime to further enhance your meal. This may not be the best testing fried hokkien prawn mee but it is good enough to satisfy a craving.

QQ Rice Address: AMK Hub #B2-07 AMK Hub Food: QQ Rice Stall Front

AMK Hub Food: QQ Rice

Started from Taiwan, QQ Rice has a total of more than 300 franchises around the World. In AMK Hub outlet, they offer a range of rice such as brown rice, purple rice, mixed grain, wheat germ brown rice, wheat five and red rice (started from $4.50). What you have to do it to first select your rice, then choose 5 fillings of your choice. It is a hit among ladies because they are low in calories.

The staff here wear gloves and places the piping hot rice onto the plastic before adding your selected ingredients. It just feels like eating a bowl of rice, except that now it’s being rolled up. I picked wheat five rice (healthier choice) with cucumber, corn, sambal, sesame chicken and fried egg. Each QQ Rice is not only tasty, but contains essential nutrients that benefits to our health. This makes a perfect quick meal before a long meeting.

Yummi Bites Address: AMK Hub #B2-36

AMK Hub Food: Yummi Bites

Sometimes, I just wanted a really quick bite, so I go for Yummy Bites which has a range of sinfully deep fried snacks such as goreng pisang, pumpkin, sweet potato, green bean, tapioca etc. My favourite is quite predictable – Goreng Pisang ($1). The crunchy coating is a good contrast to the soft but not soggy banana. Batter is light, so I can still taste the sweetness from the banana. I am also a huge fan of green bean – not too hard.

Shihlin Taiwan Street Snacks Address: AMK Hub #B2-30

AMK Hub Food: Shihlin Taiwan Street Snacks

Shihlin Taiwan Street Snacks kiosk can be found in almost every famous shopping mall and is everyone’s favourite Taiwanese food chain. Whenever I passby this kiosk, I have to urge to either buy thier XXL fried chicken, Crispy Floss in Egg Pancake or Oyster Mee Sua (depending on my mood).

Even though I am not a huge fan of their oysters, I really enjoyed the mee sua ($4). Covered with a thick starchy broth, I love slurping up the smooth meesua. They are very generous with oysters, shredded chicken meat, topped with vinegar, chili oil, garlic and parsley leaves to give it the oomph. So convienent that people eat it while standing.

Asam Tree Café, Bakery & Restaurant Address: Blk 712 Ang Mo Kio Ave 6

Ang Mo Kio Central Food: Asam Tree Café, Bakery & Restaurant

Ang Mo Kio Central Food: rojak (halal)

Near to Jubilee Shopping Centre, within 24 hours NTUC, is Asam Tree Café, Bakery & Restaurant. This is a hidden gem for me as it serves excellent nasi padang. We also love their rojak (it’s halal by the way). Even though I prefer to have my you tiao more crispy, the thick and gooey prawn paste is simply irrestibile. What’s the kick here? Their belachan IS SUPER SHIOK. Instead of adding the usual sambal chilli, the staff skilfully tossed the rojak with their homemade belachan. It gives a super spicy kick, but really, it is very addictive! They also sell mee siam, mee soto and mee rebus.
