Buffet Town in in town!!!

Eating is a Singaporean pastime, and what better way to enjoy your food than buffets?

A resurgence in all-you-can-eat buffets, an almost forgotten segment of food service, is taking place across the country. There are at least three new buffet places appearing all over the island, with the latest being Buffet Town.

Buffet Town, which was opened about 2 months ago, took over the former Shokudo Japanese Food Bazaar in Raffles City’s basement. It is still run by the same company, Thai Express Concepts. The other Shokudo outlet in The Heeren’s basement was revamped last year and is called Kiseki Japanese Buffet Restaurant.

Buffet Town Offers Shell Seafoods

Buffet Town Seafood Prawns Selection
We love buffets because of the variety of food and reasonable prices. We don’t eat too much but like to try different kinds of food. I started with the fresh seafood buffet section where there were unlimited portions of succulent seafood, chilled prawns and mussels, big and juicy freshly shucked oysters (only available for dinner) etc…

Buffet Town Sushi Selections

Buffet Town Sashimi Selection

Buffet Town Labrador Seafood Sushi
From the sashimi platter, there were salmon, tuna and yellow-tail. There were all in a big and messy plate, so it’s quite a hassle to look for the sashimi you want. I also liked the sushi which were very fresh and always gone within minutes.

Buffet Town Cooked Selections: Cooked Prawns
In the cooked food section, you can find many local delights such as fried carrot cake, braised duck in teochew style, fried seafood hor fun, steamed fish with black bean sauce, braised pork shoulder, bai lin mushrooms with vegetables, fried udon, orange flavor butter prawn, egg and garlic fried rice etc.

There were also a selection of curry. You can choose from beef curry, malay chicken curry, fish stew and beef pot-au-feu.

Buffet Town Asian Selection Rojak
The asian delights in the restaurant are well thought of, with my favourite being the Rojak. It has a good mixture of cucumber, beans sprout, pineapple, turnip, deep-fried tofu and youtiao. Drizzled with the most gorgeous sweet-tangy sauce, with sugar and peanut providing the additional crunch.

Buffet Town Asian Food Selection: Chicken Rice
Of course, we can’t miss out the popular chicken rice and daily herbal soup special. However, I felt the rice was too oily.

Buffet Town Chilly Crab & Fried Bun

Buffet Town's Crab. Look at the Chilly Crab.
For dinner, Buffet Town serves chilli or black pepper crab. There’s just something about meaty crabs slathered in spicy, sweet and highly addictive sauce that has everyone clamouring to get a taste of this iconic dish. Not only the locals love it, there were even foreigners queuing for it. Fried mantou are served to mop up the sauce.

Buffet Town Pizza Selection
Pizza range from Hawaiian, Sausages, Seafood and Forest Mushrooms. I find the crust too thick.

Buffet Town Japanese Tempura Selection
Not forgetting the tempura corner for Japanese food lovers.

Buffet Town Pasta Area

Buffet Town Pasta Selection
The pasta station here serves up hearty pasta dishes to your choice of ingredients and sauce: Aglio Olio, Pesto-base, Cream or Tomato-base.

I suggest they should have a number tag system here as well, just like the Teppanaki Section. I picked my ingredients and sauce, came back 5 mins later to find 5 similar plates of spaghetti. But none of them is mine as I did not include some of the ingredients.

Buffet Town Robatayaki Counter: Fish

Buffet Town Robatayaki Food Counter
There is also the Robatayaki counter where you can enjoy the omega-goodness of grilled mackerel, yakitori, onion, mussels mantai, shisamo, scallop, prawns, pineapple etc. This is a station not to be missed.

Buffet Town Satay
There are also local satay such as chicken, pork and beef. What impressed me, was that besides having cucumber and ketupuk as sides, there was also satay sauce with pineapple blender. Unfortunately, the satays that day were too dry and tough.

Buffet Town Meat Counter

Buffet Town Vegatable Counter
More blazing hot items can be found at the Teppanyaki station where you can have a combination of juicy Meats, assorted vegetables and seafood, all skillfully prepared. Pick your favourite meat and vegetables, hand it to the servers and they will hand you a number tag to collect your dish after 10 minutes.

Buffet Town Bean Drink Counter

Buffet Town Uses Non-GMO Canadian Beans
What’s special about this restaurant, is they have a fresh soya bean section which serves rich and thick soya bean drink. You can add your own sugar syrup according to your taste.

Buffet Town Ice Cream Counter

Buffet Town Desserts Counter
There are over 20 mouth-watering desserts such as freshly-made waffles, crepes, tarts, cakes, puddings, ice-cream and other local favorites such as ice kachang and goring pisang. I really enjoyed the goreng pisang very much, the banana was big and sweet.

Buffet Town Coffee & Tea Counter
Another local fix in Buffet Town is the coffee and tea section which serves kopi or teh coffee shop-style. There will be a aunty who will prepare the drink for you. If not for her uniform, I thought I was in a old school coffee shop. Very enjoyable after a meal.

Selection of Wine and Beer are also available at separate cost.

Buffet Town Provides a Playground for Parents with Kids

Buffet Town Playground Space
For families with active kids, there is a mini playground where young children (between 2 to 8 years) can enjoy themselves with various games and parents can conveniently watch over them whilst eating.

Conclusion: I quite enjoy the variety of international and local dishes in Buffet Town. There are alot of international buffets around the island but there isn’t any that put efforts to create a good local spread. Moreover, the pricing for Buffet Town is very reasonable, considering the wide range of buffet spread and fresh seafood they provide. Very suitable for families, I would definitely bring my grandpa here next time round!
