Chikuwa Tei @ Mohamed Sultan Road – Chirashi Don for you?

Just a few weeks ago, we were celebrating Michelle’s birthday at Chikuwa Tei. Located along Mohamed Sultan Road, I first discovered this place when I was dining at Spathe Public House last year.

We were celebrating Michelle’s birthday at Chikuwa Tei. Located along Mohamed Sultan Road, Chikuwa Tei was started by the famous food nazi Chef Peter Teo. He was also the former chef of the wildly popular Wasabi Tei at Far East Plaza. Unfortunately, he has left Chikuwa Tei last year and is now at Mitsuba by Yurine Japanese Restaurant.

Chikuwa Tei:
Chikuwa Tei: foie gras salad

Here, there are lots of affordable set menus to choose from. We started with some foie gras salad with carrot dressing. Definitely a fanciful appetizer!

The chawanmushi here definitely got a lot of “liao” (ingredients). It is flooded with chicken, prawns and alot of mushrooms.

Chikuwa Tei: stir fried kurobuta pork

We had a plate of stir fried kurobuta pork for sharing.

Chikuwa Tei: Chirashi Don

There are 18 bento sets on the menu to choose from at varied prices. The birthday girl was craving for sashimi so she ordered their signature Chirashi Don ($25). It is a colourful bowl of Chirashi, which had various kinds of sashimi covering the rice. This includes mekajiki, shake, maguro and tai sashimi, all of them are cut into thick slices. The multifarious flavours and textures mingling with the rice are incredibly good with every mouthful. I think the boy will love this too.

Chikuwa Tei: Tara Nabe Teishoku

Then we also had the Tara Nabe Teishoku ($24) which has cod fish and vegetables in claypot set. Nothing much to shout about except for the big portion.

Chikuwa Tei: Sukiyaki Teishoku

My Sukiyaki Teishoku ($22), a hot claypot filled to the brim with slices of raw beef, enoki mushrooms, carrots and cabbage, bubbled under the high heat from a portable stove placed under the pot. It was not top-grade beef but decent enough. The beef was tender and the vegetables tasty and full of flavour, thanks to the soup.

Maureen and friends at Chikuwa Tei

I have heard that standard here drops after Chef Peter left but I can’t make a comparison because I didn’t get a chance to try this restaurant during Chef Peter’s era. But I feel that the food here is pretty decent and I don’t mind coming back again to try their Chirashi Don and Ten Cha Soba set.

It is best to come during weekday because the queue during weekends is crazy. I made a reservation at 6.30pm, and by 8pm they were rushing us to leave because there was a freaking long queue of people waiting at the entrance and people are just staring at you to finish your dinner.

By the way, I made a banana cake with cream cheese frosting for the birthday girl. Click here for recipe.
