Chui Huay Lim Teochew Cuisine

Chui Huay Lim Teochew Cuisine Sign

I love family dinners because we get to update on each other’s lives and try new restaurant. We were celebrating a series of occasions and Aunty recommended Chui Huay Lim Teochew Cuisine. Located in Chui Huay Lim Clubhouse at Keng Lee Road (near Newton Circus) that has a history of more than 166 years, Chui Huay Lim Teochew Cuisine is launched by JUMBO Group of Restaurants and serve over 150 dishes of Teochew-style signature creations with live seafood.

The restaurant has a rather huge dining hall that can seat 180 persons. It is a contemporary looking restaurant decorated with Chinese brocade screens and traditional Chinese musical instruments. Nothing much to shout about. Flavour wise, Chui Huay Lim’s menu combines traditional Teochew fare that we are familiar with in Singapore and culinary influences from Chaozhou in China. You do not need to be a club member to dine in the restaurant.

Chui Huay Lim Teochew Cuisine's Deep fried Ngoh Hiang Rolls

Dinner started with the bite-size Deep Fried Ngoh Hiang Rolls ($9 per portion) are light and crisp on the outside, and the filling of pork and prawns are finely minced, packed on the dense side and very tasty. It is flavoured with five spice powder and deep fried till crispy good.

Chui Huay Lim Teochew Cuisine's pig's trotter jelly

A good pig’s trotter jelly should have a proportionate amount of meat pieces and jelly bits. Teochew Pig’s Trotter Jelly ($9 per portion) is well made, and the chilli is a good accompaniment. Only complaint is that it was very firm, they may have used much gelatin.

Chui Huay Lim Teochew Cuisine's Teochew Braised Buck

The Chui Huay Lim Teochew Cuisine menu would feature a good range of braised items – a Teochew hallmark. One of which is the Teochew Braised Buck ($16 per portion, $28 half, $54 whole). They are neatly sliced and tender with the “lor” well spiced. I can just pair it with a bowl of white rice and be a happy girl.

Chui Huay Lim Teochew Cuisine's Oyster Omelette

Oyster Omelette ($12) is rather oily and gooey with crispy sides. I wished they have fatter and better quality oysters.

Chui Huay Lim Teochew Cuisine's Teochew Style Steamed Pomfret

Even though we are not Teochews, but Teochew Style Steamed Pomfret (seasonal price) remains a perennial favourite among the family. The fresh fish is simply steamed with tomatoes, salted vegetables, sour plum and topped with chopped Chinese parsley. It has the sweetness from the fish and tangy flavour from the plum..

Chui Huay Lim Teochew Cuisine's Teochew Puning Fermented Bean Chicken

Teochew Puning Fermented Bean Chicken ($16 half, $30 whole) is a highly recommended dish in the restaurant. The free-range chicken is succulent and flavourful, flavoured with salted soybeans. This dish is from Puning, a region in Chaozhou.

Chui Huay Lim Teochew Cuisine's Braised Conpoy with Eight Vegetarian Treasures

Braised Conpoy with Eight Vegetarian Treasures ($32 Medium, $48 Large) is very well braised and flavoured with dried scallops.

Chui Huay Lim Teochew Cuisine's Teochew Seafood Fried Mee Sua

Teochew Seafood Fried Mee Sua ($18 small, $27 medium, $36 large) has generous portion of seafood and not too oily.

Chui Huay Lim Teochew Cuisine's hot Sweet Yam Paste with Pumpkin and Gingko Nuts

The hot Sweet Yam Paste with Pumpkin and Gingko Nuts ($4.50 per portion) is smooth but lacked the natural flavour and texture of fresh yam. And the flavouring could be better too.

Maureen's parent celebrating @ Chui Huay Lim Teochew Cuisine

We celebrated my parents’ birthdays during the dinner too! They will play birthday song in the background!

Food wise, I think they do quite quality Teochew dishes but I haven’t tried enough Teochew restaurants to draw a conclusion. Our meal came up to about $400 for a table of 10. If you have the Jumbo card, remember to bring it along to enjoy discount! They have a special Teochew Porridge Menu for lunch which features over 26 specialties, probably I can check that out with my grandpa soon!

Do you have a favourite Teochew restaurant to recommend?
