Clementi 448 Market & Food Centre

Whenever readers email me to ask me for food recommendations in the west, I am always scratching my head. I really didn’t have much chance to explore the west until recently, when my friends recommended me to try the sesame oil chicken at Blk 448 Clement Market & Food Centre.

During my subsequent trips there, I explored many other stalls as well. The best thing is, many of these stalls in the food centre accept NETS FlashPay! It is super convenient for me because sometimes I don’t have cash on hand, so I can just pay with a tap using FlashPay! Here are some of the recommended stalls at Clementi hawker centre:

Fried Carrot Cake

Unit: #01-45
Opening hours: 7am to 11am, closed on Mondays

This stall has the most ordinary signage, but EXTRAORDINARY queue. The first time I am here (about 12pm), the owner are cleaning up already. The second time I am here, oh man, there are at least 20 people in front of me queuing for carrot cake. So I waited approximately 45 mins and decided to order 2 plates instead of one. This fried carrot cake stall started by the current owner’s dad in 1960s as push carts at Or Kio Tao (Beo Crescent). After redevelopment, they shifted to Tiong Bahru and moved to Clementi more than 10 years ago. The dad is easily recognizable because he always wears a straw hat. His carrot cakes is soft and mushy kind which is a favourite among the old generation. After his son took over, their carrot cake was said to taste better with some crisp and charred bits. Even though they no longer make their own carrot cake, they still use lard oil and fish sauce to fry, making it one of the more fragrant carrot cake in Singapore!

Kee Hock

Unit: #01-43
Opening hours: 11am to 8.30pm, closed on Thursday

Clementi 448 Market & Food Centre: Kee Hock's Beef Hor Fun

Used to locate in Yew Tee, but shifted to Clementi about 2 years back. Ordered their signature Beef Hor Fun ($4.50). The kway teow was already stir fried beforehand. When an order is placed, the owner will then start cooking the sauce. The gravy for the beef hor fun is very dark. Every piece of Kway Teow is smeared with luscious gravy together with a slight “charred” taste. I find it slightly too savoury for my liking, but my makan buddy enjoyed it. The main star is the huge and tender slices of beef. If you are not a beef lover, go for their fish hor fun with has a lighter gravy but equally flavourful.

Four Seasons Cheng Tng

Unit: #01-42
Opening hours: 9am to 9pm

The weather is really humid lately. Nothing works better to cool me down than a bowl of chilled cheng tng. Originated from Toa Payoh, Four Seasons Ching Teng serves a pretty good version for $2. All the ingredients have already packed in the plastic containers, upon placing your order, they will fill the ingredients with longan soup. So many ingredients are swimming in the longan soup – candied winter melon, dried persimmons, white fungus, dried longans, barley, ginkgo nuts, sago balls and even bits of lotus root. The level of sweetness was just right. The Cheng Teng is available in hot and cold version.

Tanglin Halt Western Food

Unit: #01-11
Opening hours: 11am to 8pm, closed on Monday & Tuesday

Tanglin Halt serves less sinful western food because they cooked using salt that contains less sodium than regular salt, and oil containing less saturated fat and more unsaturated fat. His signature Chicken Cutlet ($4.50) is deep fried but surprisingly did not taste greasy. Crispy exterior while the meat is moist. What’s interesting is the sweet sauce that is splashed over the cutlet at the end which makes it more tasty. In fact, this secret sweet sauce is splashed many of his dishes. Each dish also came with baked beans, coleslaw and unsalted fries which we really love!

Soon Huat Cooked Food

Unit: #01-14
Opening hours: 11am to 8pm, rest day not fixed

This is the only stall in the hawker centre that sells sesame oil chicken ($4) and does it very well. The tender chicken chunks are cooked in thick and flavourful gravy with the aroma from sesame oil and wine. Small slices of ginger are included in the gravy. It goes very well with rice. They also serve other dishes such as braised mutton, dong po meat and curry chicken. Potatoes are cooked separately from the spicy and rich curry, hence it still retains its shape and is very soft.
