North Canal Road seems to be the up and coming dining choice with so many new and good restaurants popping up in the area (read about tamashii robataya). Communal is a cosy and modern American restaurant that has a super cool industrial chic look with its open kitchen concept. Helmed by chef and owner Ryan Jetté, who has vast experiences from top restaurants in San Francisco, New York and most recently as as executive sous chef of the The Sentosa Resort and Spa. Inspired by the approach to a traditional diner back home in America, Chef Ryan has created polished renditions of the classics that are worth trying.

It seems that Mac & Cheese is getting more love from locals these days. It uses the most unassuming ingredients – pasta and cheese, but it is surely not easy to cook it well. While some restaurants’ mac & cheese was simply too dense to be enjoyable, I like Communal’s version ($8) which has a light cream sauce and topped with generous shavings of parmesan, gruyere, and white cheddar cheese. Rich and cheesy goodness!

Girlfriend insisted that the fried chicken here is a must-try, so we ordered a plate to share. It was a mistake because I think I can finish the whole plate of fried chicken by myself. Chef’s Fried Chicken ($18) is VERY GOOD. It is crispy on the outside with tender and juicy meat on the inside. I am amazed at how a simple dish like this can be so spectacular!

We also ordered the Communal Burger Deluxe ($25) which is a double cheeseburger with onions, bacon, lettuce, tomato and fried egg! The thick and juicy beef patty is irresistible, and you can still add in a 30g serving of pan-fried foie gras ($8) if you like.

Finally, how about a lemon tart ($7) to end the meal? It has the right amount of sourness to tantalise your taste buds and the pine nut crust is a rich biscuit spread with a scoop of whipped cream on top.

A good meal in all. Would come back for its fried chicken if I am nearby.
