Katong is well known for its rich peranakan heritage. If you are a huge nonya fan like me, you will be delighted to know that Feast@East at Grand Mercure Roxy is having Peranakan Food Festival from 13th to 26th May 2013.

All these dishes are prepared using the recipe from 78-year-old Mrs Jane Quek. Being an original Peranakan woman, this is her forth year collaborating with Grand Mercure Roxy to promote the peranakan food festival.

Mrs Quek takes pride in her cooking and is very meticulous in the preparation of the dishes as she really believes in serving the ultimate authentic Peranakan dishes for a true Persnakan gastronomic experience.

My lunch started with some ninja achar, papaya salad, pineapple with cucumber, spicy shredded chicken salad, marinated jellyfish, sambal quail egg.

At the live cooking station, chef prepares nonya laksa and Mee Siam which are must-trys. Especially the nonya laksa, it has super thick laksa soup with fragrant coconut milk in it. You can choose to add cockles or go without it.

Here, you can definitely find some popular Peranakan dishes such as chap chye, Babi Buah Keluak, Satay Ayam, Assam Pedas Tengiri, Prawn Nanas, Itek Sio etc. All these recipes are from Mrs Jane Quek and she makes sure there is quality control in the dishes served.

Very happy to find Nasi Ulam because this fried rice requires a lot of work and not many Peranakan restaurants sell it. The rice is stir fried with many vegetables and herbs to give it a light and fluffy texture.

And don’t forget to have a bowl of Salted vegetables and duck soup which is very flavorful and the peranakans pair it with some green chili.

Last but not least, enjoy traditional nonya kuehs such as ondeh ondeh, rempah udang, steamed tapioca, pulut kaya, kueh koswee, kueh rainbow, kueh dadar etc. My favorite is rempah udang which comes with spicy hei bi hiam.
