Raffles City is a shopping mall I love to visit. Especially being a food writer, the extensive food and beverage choices at Basement 1 is so hard to resist. They offer a delicious mix of international and local fare, with over 70 restaurants, cafes and kiosks showcasing the best of Italian, Japanese, American, Korean, Vietnamese and local flavours.

In conjunction with Singapore Food Festival 2012, Raffles City is organising a Mastercard mall-wide F&B promotion from now till 29th July. You can visit Raffles City Epicurean Society for more details.

Thanks to the good people at Raffles City, I was invited on a food trail to try 3 restaurants – Sho Teppan, The Pizza Place and ThaiExpress. Many people feel that good food must be expensive but I don’t agree! Good food doesn’t necessarily cost you an arm or a leg. At least in Raffles City, this is what I see: wallet-friendly quality food. If you are looking for some affordable good meal, here’s a quick guide on where to go.  Ready, get set, dig in!

Sho Teppan
Unit: #B1-44B

Can’t decide between sukiyaki or teppanyaki? You can have the best of both worlds at Sho Teppan! Started in 2009, this iron-plate cooking method allows you to BE YOUR OWN CHEF and create the perfect meal for yourself.
Wagyu Beef, Premium Black Angus, Kurobuta Pork Loin are just some options you can choose from. Their Wagyu beef and kurobuta pork is specially imported from United States. Each serving is thinly sliced and well measured at 150g per portion, which is rather value-for-money!

At Sho Teppan, you can sit back and relax while the chef in command whip up your order right ahead of you!

I ordered Wagyu Beef teppanyaki ($21.90) served with miso soup, salad and rice. I like that each teppanyaki is served individually and I can choose how I want my beef to be done.

Everything was done in a induction cooker within 3 minutes! My waygu beef is well-marinated with their secret teppanyaki sauce. It is a little spicy which adds a little kick to the meal. Each piece is tender and springy.
Another added plus was that the restaurant is smoke-free. I leave without having to worry about food stench thereafter. Besides Teppanyaki, they also have akimeshi, nabe (either sukiyaki or shabushabu) and yaki udon!

The latest addition to the menu – Mochi Ice Cream ($4.90 each), made with premium ice cream wrapped in a mochi (sticky rice cake) layer!
The Pizza Place

Located at a cosy corner is The Pizza Place, which serves gourmet New York City styled pizzas.

This pizza parlour offers close to 40 classic and gourmet pizzas, with a choice of thin crust or classic hand tossed. The owner, Gabriel created all the pizzas based on his travel experiences and they are  handmade upon order. He uses 2 different kinds of flour to make the crust so as to get the desired texture.

Because this is a tasting invite, I wanted to try as many flavours as possible, Gabriel is kind enough to make me a pizza in different flavours.
Double Cheeseburger: Tangy tomato sauce, ground beef, beef pastrami, onions, mozzarella, cheddar, honey mustard
King’s Special: Creamy sauce, button mushroom, ground beef, beef pepperoni, fresh tomatoes, green capsicum, mozzarella
The Carnivore: BBQ sauce, chicken chunks, ground beef, beef pastrmi, turkey ham, beef pepperoni, squids, prawns, mozzarella
Spinach & Ricotta (vegetarian): Pizza sauce, spinach, fresh tomatoes, parmesan, ricotta, mozzarella, cracked black pepper.
*MY FAVOURITE!*
I like the Double Cheeseburger and King’s Special (sorry I can’t decide which one I like best). The Double Cheeseburger is made from two types of cheese: cheddar and mozarella and it tasted so similar to the cheeseburger in fast food chains! As for the King’s Special, I like it that the minced beef is marinated with herbs.

The crust is not super thick but crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I don’t feel very heavy even after finishing 4 slices! It is just right for lunch during the rush hour. And the waiting time is approximately 15 minutes to get your freshly baked pizza!

The pizzas come in various sizes: personal 6″ ($10.80), regular 10″($14.80) and large 14″($34.80). Besides pizzas, you can also enjoy pastas, baked rice, spicy buffalo wings, fresh salads and finger food.
The Pizza Place has No pork, No lard, No GST and No service charge.

If you have been following my threads, you’d know that I’m a fan of Thai Express for their wide options at a fraction of price!

Immense your senses with Tom Yam Talay ($7.90). The Thai word talay or taleh means ‘sea’, refers to the mixed seafood in the soup. Do you know this is the traditional clear soup they drink in Thailand? The Tom Yam Talay here has a well balanced mix of spice and fragranc. The seafood from within is equally fresh.
IMG_5619
Haw Mok Talay ($7.90) or Thai seafood otah is another popular side dish at ThaiExpress. The coconut based seafood otah is well mixed with Thai herbs and spices, and steamed in banana leaves to bring up the aroma.

The next dish: Thai Sukiyaki Nam ($10.90) is my favourite. Besides having the freshest seafood stuffed in a bowl, the blend of spices within is customized to suit our local taste bud. I also enjoyed the texture of the noodles, cooked just right for me!

If you are rushing for time, try the improved version of Sa-nook Thai Honey Chicken Set ($8.90). Sa-nook means fun and enjoyment in Thai, and a Sa-nook set comes with a main course, a side dish and a dessert, which leaves you with only the best.
My Thai Honey Chicken set comes with a Thai Honey Chicken with Thai Horm Mali Rice, Green Curry Chicken Basil, Fragrant Coconut Milk Sago with Thai Red Atap Seed. A complete meal at only $10!
Sa-nook Set is available at Raffles City from 1st June to 31st August for dine-in.

Last but not least, the dessert of must-have when I visit ThaiExpress, is Lod Chong ($4.90), a traditional Thai dessert of green noodles made from rice flour and pandan juice served over a ladle of sweet coconut milk.
