There are always so many interesting stalls in Johor Bahru yet to be discovered. Each of them has good food with long years of history and a story to tell. We have been bugging Tony Johor Kaki to bring us back to Johor Bahru for a long time and it finally happened two days ago!

Lady luck hasn’t been on our side. Our first stop was to a kway teow kia stall at Taman Century, but it was closed. We visited the fish soup stall at Taman Ungku Tun Aminah, but it was closed as well. The hungry me was already complaining loudly that I need food (I think I am a difficult tourist haha). So the resourceful Tony brought us to Restoran Ka Hoe Kway Teow Kia (榕树下粿条仔).

First, let me sing for you “路边一棵榕树下, 是我怀念的地方…” it seems that a lot of food stalls used to be situated under a Banyan tree. Restoran Ka Hoe Kway Teow Kia started in 1978 under a Banyan tree stood near Plaza Pelangi. The big tree was long gone but the stall is still going strong and now it has a prominent stall in a coffeeshop. Almost every table in the coffeeshop is here for their kway teow kia.

Two elderly sisters work hand in hand in the stall. One of them is already 70 years old while the other is in her 60s. This reminds me of the two sisters who are selling curry mee in Penang. If you have never eaten kway teow kia before, it is similar to the kuey chap in singapore with the different pork innards for you to choose from. However, the fat kway teow used in kway chap is replaced with thin and skinny kway teow.

Everything was very well cleaned. There was no odour at all, just the mild natural flavours of fresh pork innards. I really miss the pig’s blood which is no longer available in Singapore. Their fried shallots are great too, which they peel and fries it fresh at the stall everyday.
