Sarnies' Staffs

Tucked away in Telok Ayer Street, Sarnies is prized rarity for sandwich cafes located around CBD. It’s the kind of place you could be perfectly comfortable with having a cup of coffee and chatting with the servers. Named simply for their tasty sandwiches, this cafe has the vibes of an Australian cafe and has certainly lived up to the high praise from my friend.

Lunch menu begins from 11am till 3pm with a variety of huge sandwiches and substantial salads. We were there at about 2pm on a Thursday, I was surprised that the cafe is sooooo crowded. The place definitely has a strong following with the office crowd from the neighborhood.

It is never easy to make sandwich, in my opinion. A sandwich should be thoughtfully laid out, with components that add up to a complete meal. And most importantly, the ingredients should be of excellent quality. The sandwiches here are huge with prices range from about $13-$17, with a choice of white or rye bread.

Grassfed Steak ($16.50) is a real crowd-pleaser. You get all the zing you need from the tender beef, mushroom, caramelized onion, mixed greens and steak sauce. This meaty skyscraper is perfect with my cup of cappuccino which was packed a flavor punch.

My favourite is the Smoked Salmon Sandwich ($15) which has a delicious filling of capers, onion rings, mixed greens, and a dill sauce that is not overpowering. The bread was crispy on the outside and light and fluffy on the inside.

The brownie here is very good! It is moist and has the texture of a home-baked cake, yet it does not crumble like a dry cookie. Topped with ice cream and lashings of chocolate sauce, I am definitely gonna come back for this.

Here, it’s happy, easy food with minimal pretence. Service is friendly and fast. The staff are very chirpy and they talk to you like they have known you for long. There’s always laughter and it really feels like they’re having fun as they work through the lunch crowd.

A meal here is more about the experience than what you actually consume. Their sarnies may be slightly pricey for some, but it is a pleasant cafe experience. I will be back for brunch.
