Seng Kee Bak Kut Teh (Ang Mo Kio)

More than 2 years ago, I was tweeting about doing a “Bak Kut Teh Adverture”, to eat and blog about all the good bak kut teh places in Singapore.

Then, I met my boyfriend (he was still an acquaintance then), who tried to please me by planning our first date at Founders Bak Kut Teh. In our subsequent courtship days, he also brought me to Ya Hua Bak Kut Teh. Eventually, he won my hearts with that two bowls of Bak Kut Teh.

I thought he was going to join me in discovering all the bak kut teh places (that will be so sweet, isn’t it?). But fairy tales are still fairy tales after all. Once he won the girl’s heart, we hardly ate any Bak Kut Teh. And there was once when I had my bak kut teh craving, he said:”I don’t really like Bak Kut Teh!”

Oh wells, men. Haiz.

Anyway, because of work, I get a chance to get my Bak Kut Teh craving fixed at Chong Boon Market & Food Centre last week. This bak kut teh stall is not a stranger to anyone living in Ang Mo Kio. When I was still a kid, my dad would always bring me there.

Seng Kee sells very traditional Teochew style Bak Kut Teh. It is a clear soup made of pork ribs, garlic cloves and pepper. The garlic and pepper provide just enough kick and not too overpowering, as compared to Ng Ah Sio Bak Kut Teh.

Seng Kee Bak Kut Teh (Ang Mo Kio): braised pig trotter

Pairing with my bowl of Bak Kut Teh was the beautifully braised pig trotter. We were initially shocked by the portion but the aunty who served us told us to stop worrying and start eating. Very confident of her food, wasn’t she?

Well, there was nothing much to worry indeed. The meat was real soft and tender, very delectable.

Another dish that you must order here is their very classical Teochew Steamed Fish which it very rare in Bak Kut Teh stalls. Fresh fish is best eaten steamed, don’t forget to pair it with a bowl of Bak Kut Teh for the ulitmate enjoyment.

And I hope after eating this bowl of Bal Kut Teh, the boy is convinced to explore more Bak Kut Teh places with me.
