Nestled atop the forested Labrador Nature Reserve, Tamarind Hill Restaurant serves traditional and contemporary Siamese cuisine in a stand-alone historic colonial bungalow amid a vastly green surrounding.

No no, this is not an invited tasting if you are wondering. We are busy sourcing for a nice venue to hold our wedding next year and Tamarind Hill is one of our considerations. Isn’t this a beautiful place? Just like a resort right? It has lots of Asian-inspired elements within the restaurant such as golden Buddha statues, fabric with ethnic embroidery, and wooden furnishings. Even the staff here wear sarongs!

Tamarind Hill belongs to the Malaysian resort and restaurant group, Samadhi Retreats. There is outdoor and indoor seating and it can accommodate about 180 diners. It is a little troublesome to come here if you don’t have a car. But the location just makes us feel like we are here for another vacation as it is away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Tamarind Hill Restaurant: Tamarind Hill Platter

The menu is extensive and has choices even for vegetarians. It is divided into sections – appetizers, salads, soups, curries, seafood and crustacean, poultry, meat and game, beef and lamb, vegetables, rice, vegetarian menu and dessert.

To kick off the meal, we had the Tamarind Hill Platter ($28) which was a selection of fine Thai hor d’oeuvres, each having its own unique taste and texture. I have to give special praise to the prawn cakes which were soft in the inside and a crisp on the exterior.

Tamarind Hill Restaurant: Lychee Duck Salad

Moving on, we ordered a bowl of Lychee Duck Salad ($22) mixed with tamarind and honey glaze. The duck meat was a little dry and not succulent enough. The sweet and juicy lychee kinda made up for it.

Tamarind Hill Restaurant: Clear Tom Yam Seafood

Clear Tom Yam Seafood ($28) was a winner, with its well-balanced flavours working in harmony to deliver a delicious soup, and with the spiciness kicking in only after a few spoonfuls. It is a robust, clear sour soup full of fresh seafood and infused the delicate flavors of galangal, kaffir lime and lemongrass.

Tamarind Hill Restaurant: Grilled Pork Chop

Unfortunately, the Grilled Pork Chop ($36) was slightly overdone, resulting in a slightly tough meat. The dishes served are suitable for 2 pax portion and we ordered a bowl of Lemon Grass Fried Rice ($12) to share.

We paid close to $150 for a meal here. Expect the prices here to be higher than an average Thai restaurant. I wasn’t impressed with my dinner but I enjoyed the intimate dinner with my partner and soaking in the ambience of the place.

Word of caution though, if you are prone to mosquitoes, be sure to spray some insect repellent. I had 6 itchy mosquito bites after the visit.
