Xiao Long Bao is my comfort food. Imagine this, you await your order of xiao long bao. The steamer arrives. You delicately take a dumpling between two chopsticks, carefully dipping it into vingar and then pop the dumpling into your mouth, letting the broth escape and fill your mouth…I enjoy the moment where I can slowly savor the essence and juiciness of this delicacy.
The Eastern Restaurant’s Yi Ping Steamed Pork Dumpling (Xiao Long Bao, $4 for 4) here are much bigger than any of the dumplings that I had before. Its skin may not be thinnest, but within the seemingly-thick folds, it was bursting with hot, fragrant broth every bite.
For a quick savoury fix that is not quite as complex in flavour but no less rich and tasty, Huai Yang Salted Duck ($7) is one of the recommended appetizer. The meat is tender, and if there is a garlic sauce to go with it, it will taste better.
Shrimp in “Long Jing” Style ($19) is an interesting name. Bitter tea + prawns = I don’t know what does it give. But actually, I can’t taste the Long Jing tea in the dish, all I had was crunchy fresh prawns which is similar to the prawn salad we have in wedding dinners.
No matter how many times I have visited this place, Fu Rong Special Scrambled Egg ($10.80) is the dish that I will always order. The plate was full of crab meat and egg white, with a yolk on top, mix well with vingear and you get this tempting juicy dish.
Sauteed Green Bean with Minced Pork ($9.80) is crispy, gives a balance to the meal.
When I visited the restaurant last year, I clearly commented that the Braised Pork Belly with Mui Choy is too salty. This time, I decided to give it another chance and I must say that it was so much better. Well marinated, the meat is tender and flavourful.
How can I complete a meal with ordering some dim sum? We concluded our most impressive meal with Flowing Custard Bun ($4.50 for 3) which you can see is very well made such that the fillings are just oozing out.
This is the Shanghai chef, making the la mian.
