Veganburg

We used to think that plant based diet is impossible until VeganBurg is born. It proves that fast food is not junk food and its nutritious burgers can be as tasty as its meaty counterparts. The casual, burger joint set‐up is designed to excite the green community and inspire others to adopt a plant‐based or meat‐free dietinto their lifestyle at least once a week.

Both owners Alex and Tracy have been vegetarians for more than a decade and have been very active with the relatively small vegetarian community in Singapore. The vegan community is even smaller, as the diet specifies no dairy or egg products in addition to plantfoods. At the moment, there are no modelfastfood options for the plant‐based diet community, not anything close to the iconic McDonald’s. Hence, they created VeganBurg which is the first vegan fast food restaurant in Singapore.

On one of the Sundays, the boy and I decided to spend some quiet time together. We were having too much grills that week so we headed to Veganburg for lunch.

This is not real sausage. This is tofu sausage – VeganFranks ($3.90). Frankly, it tastes quite good. While it has the flavour and smell of your normal meat sausage, it’s lighter in taste and softer.

The most memorable dish I had in Veganburg is their Granny’s Soup ($3.90). It is a feel-good bowl of nourishing minestrone packed with flavour and made with over 12 different ingredients.

Their ciabatta, rye and wholemeal burgers buns are made from organic wholemeal grains, raw sugar, natural sea salt and distilled water. This is a breakthrough of burger buns in the food industry, achieved through numerous rounds of R&D to transform a rock hard soup bun into a soft and fluffy burger bun. The burger buns are infused with ingredients such as omega, zinc and B12, as these are very essential nutrients for plant-based diet.

Veganburg’s patties are made from 100% vegetable ingredients ‐ mainly soya beans and mushrooms ‐ and contain no gluten, dairy, eggs, genetically modified organisms (GMO), preservatives or trans fat. All burgers come complete with juicy tomatoes, organic alfalfa, crunchy lettuce and luscious pineapple rings which are plant diet staples.

Recommended by a friend, I ordered the Smoky BBQ Burger Set ($7.90 ala carte / $11.80 for set). Served in a mess tin, the burger is served with fat fries and drinks. The oven-baked patty is made of minced mushrooms and had a really interesting texture. The boy had Hawaiian Teriyaki ($6.90 ala carte / $10.80 for set) which we both love it more because it tasted less vegetarian! Haha! It has a brilliant combination of pan grilled pineapple slice with a soy patty glazed with teriyaki sauce – hence offering a tangy treat.

I think their drinks can do better. It was diluted and artificial. They should consider having real healthy fruit juice maybe?

VeganBurg is definitely a healthier and more sustainable option. People say that this is the future of fast food. What do you think? Do you enjoy Veganburg?
