Located in Mayflower Market and Food Centre in Ang Mo Kio, 3 Sisters Prawn Noodle is a humble prawn mee stall which also has Hokkien mee on the menu. The stall is run by — you guessed it — three sisters. With moderate waiting times, good food that’s worth every dollar, and excellent customer service, the stall is quite the ideal lunch spot.

The owners’ father used to run a prawn noodle stall once upon a time on Sin Ming Road. After he passed on, the sisters learnt the know-hows of cooking prawn noodles from their mother — from preparing the stock to whipping up the handmade chilli.

The Lim sisters run their operations like a well-oiled machine. They each have a designated role; the eldest sister handles the front-of-house by taking orders and preparing takeaways, the second sister is in charge of frying up the Hokkien mee while the youngest of them is the one cooking both the soup and dry versions of the prawn noodles.

The Prawn Noodle Soup ($3.50/4) came topped with prawns, fish cake slices, sliced pork, greens, a handful of fried shallots and a dash of pepper. The yellow noods did have a bit of an alkaline taste to them, but that could be easily overwritten by the broth.

The soup stock is boiled with pork bones, prawn heads, and other ingredients, resulting in a delicious soup that has a strong fragrance. As for the prawns, they were delicately sweet and super-duper fresh. I would have preferred it to be served whole though; imagine sinking your teeth into the flesh of a whole, juicy prawn.

Those who like their spice should give the Prawn Noodle Dry ($3.50/4) a go. While the noodles tossed in chilli don’t leave you frantically guzzling water, you should expect a lingering heat as you slurp up the springy mee kia. There was also a copious amount of shallots added, giving the entire dish a lovely fragrance that complemented the spiciness.

The noodles were topped with prawn, fishcakes, and thin slices of pork. The meat quickly became a surprising favourite of mine. Nicely marinated while still maintaining a pleasant porky taste, this was quite a treat whether you have it coated in the noodle sauce or in the accompanying soy sauce chilli.

Folks who have been fans of 3 Sisters Prawn Noodle since their earlier days in Bishan, you’re in luck! Making a return on their menu is the back-by-popular-demand Mee Rebus ($3), completed with tau kwa (fried beancurd), fried shallots, fresh-cut green chilli, a hard-boiled egg and a drizzle of kecap manis. The yellow noods were drenched in a thick, fragrant sauce that had a complex mix of sweet and spicy flavours. Sedap!

The nostalgia-evoking dishes at 3 Sisters Prawn Noodle left me craving for more. I’m now even more excited to give their Fried Hokkien Mee ($4/5) a try!
