I have visited a few young hawkers who have decided to open up their own hawker stalsl in a bid to save Singapore’s dying hawker culture. As always, it is always heartening to see them follow their dreams and fulfill their passions. Ah Keat Chicken Rice is another newcomer in this wave of young hawkers.

Only 27, chef Wei Keat enrolled in the Hawker Development Programme (HDP) in 2021 for a 2 month apprenticeship at Leong Hainanese Chicken Rice.

The menu here is kept relatively simple with only 2 main dishes on offer — Chicken Rice ($4) and their Signature Chicken Porridge ($6). Soft chicken breast lay on a bed of fragrant chicken rice, with some bean sprouts on the side. The Chicken Rice was not the best I’ve ever eaten, but made for a comforting plate of familiar flavours. The accompanying chilli gave a good kick, albeit being on the milder side, spice-level wise.

I also had a plate of Vegatables ($2/3), which were slightly undercooked.

Their Signature Chicken Porridge came with heaps of different toppings — chicken breast, shallots, spring onion, braised peanuts and interestingly, a ramen egg. A modern twist, the ramen egg was a pleasant surprise, and ir was executed well with a runny yolk. The porridge was not plain, but rather flavoured sufficiently, and had similar flavours to the chicken rice.

Ah Keat Chicken Rice does not exceed expectations, but is perfect if you are looking for a comforting plate of one of Singapore’s renowned dishes.
