In the heart of Penang’s bustling Beach Street, a grab-and-go stall called Nasi Lemak Ali beckons with irresistible aromas. The constant snaking queues stemming from the stall are a testament to the stall’s success.

This humble food haven has been capturing the hearts of locals and visitors alike for decades — their exceptional nasi lemak has earned a well-deserved place in the esteemed Michelin Guide.

Their specialty is the sambal capped rice, which features six delightful variations, all priced at an unbelievable price of just RM2.50 per pack. From the classic combination of anchovies with a hard-boiled egg, to options comprising squid, prawn, fish, and salted fish, each pack is meticulously wrapped in a fragrant banana leaf and thoughtfully labeled. Although the portion may not be large (probably just about the size of my fist), it is delicious and will, no doubt, leave you craving for more.

The perfectly-cooked rice, infused with the essence of coconut milk, is impeccably balanced, with each grain nicely separated and no clumps in sight. However, it’s the sambal chilli that truly steals the show — it packs a powerful punch that ignites the taste buds and still carries a hint of sweetness.
