An Ngon Vietnamese Rice Rolls – Traditional Vietnamese Fillings in Made-To-Order Rice Rolls in Yishun!

When I think of Vietnamese food, what usually comes to mind are pho and banh mi. Vietnamese-style rice rolls are not as common in Singapore, where Hong Kong-style chee cheong fun dominates the market. An Ngon Vietnamese Rice Rolls is one of the few stalls with this traditional breakfast dish, made fresh to order for hungry patrons.

The stall is run by Patrick, and his wife who is pretty much the inspiration behind why they decided to make Vietnamese rice rolls the focal point of their stall. As someone who’s always had a strong interest in Vietnamese food, the missus wanted to bring a taste of the rice rolls to Singapore and spent a considerable amount of time learning the ropes while they were in Vietnam.

Almost everything is made from scratch, from the rice slurry to the sauce and Vietnamese ham that accompanies the dish. Even the steamer they use was manufactured in Vietnam and shipped to Singapore. Patrick mentioned that they had enquired about getting one made here but it comes with a very hefty price tag.

There are four different types of rice rolls — Traditional ($2.50), Char Siew ($3.50), Minced Meat ($3.50) and Smoked Duck ($3.50). Besides that, they also sell Vietnamese Bread ($4.50) and even Ban Mian/You Mian/Yee Mian ($3.50) that’s more for the lunch crowd. 

There was initially Glutinous Rice ($3.50) on the menu but Patrick told us that they’ve stopped making it in the meantime as the demand for it was low. Such a shame, we would have absolutely loved to try it.

The Minced Meat Rice Roll is a common staple in Vietnam and thus, their signature dish. The chewy rice roll is stuffed with a mix of minced meat and chopped black fungus which had been fried together. Compared to the usual chee cheong fun, it has more of a textural contrast and might take some folks a little getting used to.

You might feel that there should be more filling since there’s a generous portion of rice rolls, but here’s where the Vietnamese ham comes into play to give the dish a bit more meat. Made in-house, the ham is tenderised, wrapped in leaves, and steamed. It reminded me of spam but a less salty variation that’s been seasoned with pepper.

The rice rolls come paired with a clear sauce that’s made with fish sauce, vinegar, garlic, sugar and salt. Patrick recommended that we dip our rolls into it and the result was an addictive blend of sweetness and tanginess. I also liked how the sauce was served on the side so it doesn’t completely soak through the rice sheets.

The Smoked Duck gave the rolls a bit more of a heartier bite thanks to the larger chunks of smoked duck and of course, it gave the rolls a little more of an overall smoky flavour as well.

At the moment, there’s only one type of Vietnamese Bread on the menu but Patrick did say that perhaps further down the road, they would be open to introducing new flavours. The toasted baguette was stuffed with fresh crunchy vegetables, Vietnamese ham and chicken.

The bread itself didn’t really stand out and seemed rather ordinary while most of the flavours were dominated by the vegetables. I would skip this and just go right for the rice rolls.

An Ngon Vietnamese Rice Rolls is definitely a change of pace from the usual chee cheong fun places in Singapore so if you’re craving for something different, this is the place to check out. Just be sure to keep your eyes out for the elusive coffee shop it’s located in!
