I stayed in SengKang for 5 years and have always hoped for a decent cafe in the area. Finally, it has happened! Located a few units away from Thohirah Jalan Kayu Roti Prata, The Apricus Coffee & Food Co. is a new cafe by the people behind The Populus. I am excited to give it a try!

The Crispy Potato Stack ($12) was buttery, and had a crisp exterior and soft and tender centre. Like a savoury version of a mille crepe, preparing these thinly sliced Russet potatoes is a tedious process. Hence, they only serve limited portions daily.

THE POPULUS Scrambled Eggs ($20) is also available at The Apricus. We decided to go for the deluxe version (additional $6) where the eggs are scrambled with lobster bisque and crabmeat, and served with turkey bacon and toasted croissant. The eggs were soft and creamy!

THE APRICUS ‘Curry’ Chicken Stew ($19) was lovely. The tomato-based curry stew was creamy and adequately spicy, and tasted somewhat similar to our local curry fish head. The lightly pan-seared chicken confit was extremely tender and the meat fell off the bone easily. The stew also comprises roasted potatoes, cherry tomatoes and okra. I wish they serve breadstick so that I can mop up all that gravy.

The Norwegian Salmon Brown Butter Linguine ($23) was a very rich dish, but it’s totally yummy and a nice change to the usual pasta dishes. But that’s kinda how The Apricus rolls – their entire menu is inventive and delicious. Served with dukkah spiced salmon fillet, fennel & granny smith apple slaw, beurre noisette and shio kombu dust, it is an intriguing combination of tastes and textures, and it’s filling enough to keep you full for hours.

You can also find Populus’ Signature Buckwheat Pancake ($20) in this new cafe but we decided to go for the THE APRICUS French Toast ($22) which is beautifully topped with Niko Neko roasted rice soft serve, homemade maple granola, seasonal berries, butterscotch and cereal crumbs. Roasted Rice Soft Serve is quite a unique flavour. Surprisingly, it did have a slightly roasted flavour with a mild sweetness; almost tasted like hojicha ice cream minus the matcha flavour.

No great brunch is complete without excellent coffee. The coffee here is specially roasted by 2 Degrees North Co., so it’s rich, aromatic and always fresh.

I had a good meal at The Apricus! It has a nice ambience and is a perfect place to hang out with friends. Will definitely be back again!
