Asam Tree Café, Bakery & Restaurant

Mee Siam, Lontong, Mee Rebus… these are just some of the offerings at Asam Tree Cafe, Bakery & Restaurant. This place is always crowded. I can kinda understand why. For one, they are air-conditioned, which is really great for a humid weather like this. And also, they serve quality halal certified dishes. I usually come here for their nasi padang, but this time, I also tried some other dishes!

Asam Tree Café, Bakery & Restaurant's mee siam

We had the mee siam. It was a big bowl – not just full of the rice vermicelli. Even though the sauce is rich and robust, the portion of bee hoon was too much and didn’t absorb the flavours well. Their Mee Rebus fair better though. The sweetness of the gravy is the main draw. It is thick enough to coat each individual noodle strand for an extra burst of flavour. The texture is just right and served with freshly-sliced chilli for some extra heat.

We love their rojak too! The crispy youtiao and thick and gooey prawn paste are simply irrestibile. What’s the kick here? Their belachan IS SUPER SHIOK. Instead of adding the usual sambal chilli, the staff skilfully tossed the rojak with their homemade belachan. It gives a super spicy kick, but really, it is very addictive!

Asam Tree Café, Bakery & Restaurant's Mee Soto

Mee Soto seems to be a popular choice for many diners here. The chicken broth is spiced with tumeric to give its characteristic yellow colour. I haven’t eaten enough to company but the accompanying chilli sauce transformed the dish to the next level.

Asam Tree Café, Bakery & Restaurant's lontong

The lontong is value for money. The gravy is lemak enough without being too rich and the cabbage slices have been cooked long enough so that they require little chewing. The homemade rice pieces are not too hard.
