Tucked away in the corner of a coffee shop in Toa Payoh is an old-school Western food stall that has left an indelible mark in the hearts of customers, both old and new, for decades. Run by the elderly Uncle Liu, Asia Western Food is known for its spring chicken and fish and chips that are sold at affordable prices.

Uncle Liu is getting on in years, and has a bad back. As the solo operator in the kitchen, the slowing down of his mobility over the years has resulted in a longer wait for patrons. But another reason behind that is that the elderly chef is very meticulous when it comes to preparations as he ensures that every dish is perfectly done.

When asked if he enjoys what he does, he lightly replied in Mandarin saying “it doesn’t matter whether you like your job or not, you just do it”.

Besides a whole Spring Chicken at just $8, Asia Western Food also has Chicken Cutlet Rice ($4.50), Fried Rice ($3) and snacks such as Hash Brown ($2 for four pieces), Cheese Tofu ($2.20 for five pieces). Fish Ball ($1.50 for five pieces) and Chicken Nuggets ($2 for five pieces). What a steal!

I opted for the Spring Chicken (Half) ($4.50), which comes with a side of crinkle-cut fries and a few slices of cucumber. The golden-brown skin of the chicken had been thoroughly marinated with Uncle Liu’s secret blend of spices which he has been using since the beginning of time (aka when he first started out). This is a taste that you will definitely remember, and it no doubt sets the chicken apart from the common fare served at every other standard Western stall. The chicken was very tender and not at all overdone(a frequent problem that I encounter elsewhere), so I was really pleased!

The Fish & Chips ($4) was equally astounding. The fish was soft but firm, and was covered in a crispy, light batter that had just the right amount of crunch. There wasn’t any extra seasoning added to it and was the epitome of “simplicity at its finest”.

The fries were your run-of-the-mill crinkle-cut fries that were outsourced from a supplier, with a dash of salt. It might not stand out much, but the mains more than make up for it.

Some of you might think I’m just being kind to Uncle Liu, but I was legitimately blown away by how well executed the spring chicken and fried fish were. His dishes are 100% worth the wait, so if you’re after affordable, quality traditional Western food, make your way down to Toa Payoh Lorong 1!
