Cafe openings don’t seem to be slowing down considering how there’s a new one popping up practically every month. And in some of the most ulu neighbourhoods, no less. Today’s newest addition to the cafe family takes us to Depot Heights Shopping Centre in the Telok Blangah ‘hood, where Bailey & Whiskey has made its home.

The gorgeous interior is an instantly welcoming sight, spruced up with twinkling fairy lights, wooden furnishings, potted greenery and comfy, plush sofas adorned with stuffed animals and colourful throw pillows. It almost looks like an IKEA showroom dedicated to families and will have you feeling right at home, which was what the cafe owners had in mind when transforming this large space into a family-friendly cafe.

With a name like Bailey & Whiskey, I initially thought there was a boozy inspiration (and therefore, menu) behind it. Rather, the cafe is named after the owners’ fur kids – Bailey the toy poodle and Whiskey the black cat!

Their menu consists of an all-day breakfast section with items such as Honey Drizzled Mascarpone Toast ($14), Super Smoothie Bowl ($14) and Avocado Salmon Toast ($18), as well as Mains like Carbonara ($18), Ciabatta Eggy ($15) and The Party Burger ($19.50) with choices of Tuna, Chicken and Veggie.

In addition, there’s also an array of cakes, pastries and scones, all of which are outsourced from a supplier.

I decided to get the Whiskey’s French Toast ($16), comprising three slices of toasted brioche topped with berries and a drizzle of honey. There was even an extra serving of maple syrup for those with a penchant for the sweeter things in life.

With the supposed amount of sugar from the honey, maple syrup and light dusting of powdered sugar, some might be worried about the excessiveness of it. But thanks to the thickness of the eggy brioche, the sweetness melded well with the bread especially when eaten with the slightly tart berries. I could also detect a gentle fragrance of cinnamon in the brioche as well.

Among their cakes and bakes, two of their best-sellers that were recommended to me were Ondeh-Ondeh ($8.50) and Yuzu Osmanthus ($8.50). I opted for the latter and it was surprisingly sweeter than I’d thought it would be. The fragrance of the yuzu was present but didn’t have much zest to it. I reckon it was toned down to better suit the taste buds of the little ones.

I gave the usual coffee a pass and gave the Passionfruit Latte ($8.50) a go. Because of the word “latte”, I was expecting an iced coffee that has been infused with passionfruit juice. Bailey & Whiskey’s rendition was more of a milkshake instead and was made up of milk, passionfruit purée and maple syrup, topped with coffee granules.

While the cafe’s food offerings waver on the average side, the setting and atmosphere alone get at least a solid eight out of ten. This is definitely a nice place to spend some time with a book and a cup of coffee or if you’re feeling adventurous, they do have some boozy beverages like Tipsy Cocoa ($7.50/8.50) and Spiked Affogato ($9) which might tickle your fancy.
