Bedok Chwee Kueh

bedok chwee kueh
I think I might have found the perfect breakfast option for all you Easties right here! Bedok Chwee Kueh is the only chwee kueh stall to earn a place in the Michelin Bib Gourmand 2019 list. There is a minimum order of two pieces. The chwee kueh is topped generously with the chai poh and is accompanied with a side of chilli. If you want the ingredients to be separated, you need to order a minimum of four pieces. The chwee kueh here is so soft that it almost melts in your mouth! Since it made it into the Michelin Bib Gourmand 2019 list, you know that it has to be a cut above the rest! If you’ve lived in the East for years but have never ever tried these, what are you waiting for?

Are you a fan of spicy food? If you are, Desa Rancapanggung should be next on your list! They are known for their superb sambal, and the delicious Nasi Padang offerings they have are simply irresistible. The owners pride themselves on using only the freshest ingredients to prepare the food they serve. They are able to ensure this freshness as they purchase these ingredients personally everyday. If you are not sure what to order, the friendly owners will be more than glad to recommend dishes to you. Do try the Nasi Sambal Goreng which consists of fried tofu, tempeh, and long beans in a spicy coconut sauce, along with Sambal Cuttlefish and Beef Liver. The fragrant tofu was fried to perfection, and had a good spicy kick. Desa Rancapanggung also offers many stellar noodle dishes such as the Mee Rebus if you don’t feel like having rice. Check them out if you are in the Bedok Reservoir area!

511 Lor Mee

511 lor mee
Lor Mee is a famous local noodle dish in Singapore. A bowl of lor mee at this stall comprises noodles soaked in a thick dark gravy, and ingredients such as fried fish, braised pork, half a braised egg, crispy fritters and ngoh hiang. If you order the large portion, you will get an additional fried prawn which is absolutely delicious. 511 Lor Mee’s secret lies in their dark gooey gravy, which the owner spent countless hours perfecting. Each batch of gravy that she prepares is steeped and cooked for at least four hours! All her fried ingredients are prepared daily, so you can expect the crispiest fried items to go with your noodles.

好莱客 Hao Lai Ke

hao lai ke 2
Nestled within the Bedok neighbourhood is 好莱客(Hao Lai Ke), famed for serving restaurant quality food. It is no wonder that their food is of such high quality as the owner used to be a chef in Din Tai Feng! Their menu consists of some items we might be familiar with — Pork Ribs Fried Rice, Dan Dan Noodles, Prawn Fried Rice, 口水鸡 (Mouthwatering Chicken). The Dan Dan Noodles comes topped with a generous portion of braised minced meat, chopped onions and peanuts. You might want to help yourselves to the chili oil and stir it into your noodles. The combination of the spicy chilli and the acidity of the sauce made the dish really delectable. I strongly suggest that you have your Dan Dan Noodles with a side of the tender and juicy 口水鸡!

Soon Huat Bak Kut Teh

soon huat
A good bowl of Bak Kut Teh never fails to lift my spirits and warm my heart. Soon Huat Bak Kut Teh’s rendition of this delicious soup is similar to Klang Bak Kut Teh. The broth here is milder than the Klang version, but still very flavourful with a hint of sweetness. I like that their Bak Kut Teh soup comes with a few pieces of pork ribs and pig innards! The meat was very tender and easy to chew through. Have you heard of Dried Bak Kut Teh? This dish is served with a gooey thick gravy which is cooked with bak kut teh reduction, dark soy sauce, dried chilli, dried cuttlefish and lady’s finger. Soon Huat Bak Kut Teh also offers many other dishes such as Ginger Sesame Chicken, Braised Trotters and more !

Percolate Cafe

percolate
I am sure by now many of you must be getting used to working from home. For some of us, coffee is a staple to keep us awake whether we are working in the office or working from home. However, that 3-in-1 coffee in the kitchen or even the Kopi Peng from the coffee shop downstairs just doesn’t satisfy you. Friends living in the East will be pleased to know that Percolate Cafe is open for you to get your coffee fix! They have an extensive drinks menu that boasts coffee, tea, smoothies, sodas, and cold-pressed juices. Percolate Cafe also has a range of dairy-free alternatives for our lactose-intolerant friends. Drinks aside, their food menu is simple with a few items. Expect extremely fragrant and crispy Butter Croissants and some sweet treats. While you are there, you might want to stock up on their coffee beans so you can make yourself a good cup of coffee at home!

A halal-certified restaurant, Tang Tea House serves up a wide variety of dishes. They are famed for the freshness and authenticity of their halal dim sum. Expect chicken pau, har kow, siew mai and steamed chicken dumplings, which are prepared by their Shanghainese chefs. Their signature Pan Fried Crispy Fried Bee Hoon is also very appetizing! Don’t be fooled by its outlook, this round omelette is filled with fresh seafood and pan fried till crisp. The light and crispy crust complemented the soft moist bee hoon very well. Have it with the lime and chilli that come on the side, and I’m sure this dish will put a smile on your face.

Hock Hai (Hong Lim) Curry Noodles

hock hai
Did you know that other than the Bedok Chwee Kueh, there is another stall in Bedok Interchange Hawker Centre that made it into the Michelin Bib Gourmand 2019 list? This stall is none other than Hock Hai (Hong Lim) Curry Noodles. The curry noodles here are simply irresistible and absolutely delicious. Each piping hot bowl of curry noodles comes with a generous portion of tau pok (fried beancurd), potatoes and chicken. The soft and spongy taupok soaks up the curry and gives a burst of flavour with every bite. The chicken is soft and tender. While you are here, do try their Satay Beehoon too!  I can’t decide which dish is better, so I’d highly suggest you get both!
