Blooie's Roadhouse

You just can’t stuff a roadhouse restaurant into a shopping mall because first of all, there is no road! Secondly, all that chrome and glass is way too scary.

They need a place where you can sit outside and see the stars and not have to breathe in the exhaust fumes of a double-decker bus or be trampled on by hordes of passing humanity.

Therefore, a Roadhouse needs to be something special, and BLooiE’s Roadhouse Bar & Grill is just that. Tucked away in the tranquil Faber Hills estate, the latest Blooie’s Roadhouse (facebook here) is a casual bistro which has a large indoor dinning area, and a Al Fresco dinning for you to have a glass of beer and enjoy the night breeze.

BLooiE’s Roadhouse Bar & Grill has already been around for 12 years (gosh! How can I miss this place?!). The owner, Sarge, is a friendly Canadian who married a pretty Taiwanese wife. Blooie is actually the name of the Sarge’s previous dog which has passed on.

The menu has all the american items, like starters/appetizers, burgers, sandwiches, pasta, pizza etc. Besides all these standard items, the ONE THING you must definitely order from here is the famous Beer-Butt-Chicken.

What is a Beer-Butt-Chicken? No, it is not exactly a chicken infused with beer. As seen in the photo, Blooie’s Roadhouse…

1. Take a whole fresh chicken and rub then down with their own special spices and seasonings

2. Then they chill the bird over night to allow the spices and seasonings to marinate into the meat.

3. Just before they cook the chicken, they open a full can of beer, add a little of the spice and seasonings then gently insert the beer can up the chickens butt!

4. The chicken is then set upright on the BBQ and grilled to a sensational juicy perfection.

I know this may be a weird sight to some of you. But but but, the beer steams the chicken inside while the BBQ cooks from the outside sealing in all the juicy goodness. It’s definitely a MUST TRY.
You know people always say, a piece of chicken wings taste better when you eat it with bare hands. Seriously I do agree! So if you are game enough, tear open the whole chicken with your clean hands and savour the goodness! (If I am not taking photos on that day, I would have done that!)
In addition, they make a dipping sauce from a bit of the beer that goes great with the chicken. Each Beer-Butt-Chicken is only $38.80 (suitable for 2-4 pax) and it includes daily vegetables and famous Cajun fries.

Note: You need to call them at least a day in advance to order.

Not forgetting the other dishes which includes a Chef’s Salad ($18.90). Mesclun Green Salad is topped with Feta cheese, tomatoes and pan fried blackened dory served with balsamic dressing. The blackened dory is marinated in cajun spices, pan-fried till its crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. It doesn’t look pretty in photo, but it is actually quite addictive.

Deep Fried Button Mushrooms ($13.50) are battered, deep fried to perfection and served with garlic mayonnaise dip. It is definitely an irresistible snack which is great for watching sports.

To begin with, I am actually not quite a fan of sausages. And when the size of sausage becomes so much bigger, it did frighten me a lil.

But I must say that the Jumbo Sausages ($18.90) are pretty tasty, it comes with pork, beef and chicken cheese sausages, served with Blooie’s specialities fried. Not too salty for the palette.

Blooie’s is popular with their burgers. We had Blooie’s Bacon Mushroom Cheese Burger ($16.90) whereby 180g grilled beef patty is smothered in cheese with bacon and mushroom. Layers of smoky goodness bring a unique flavor to the classic American cheeseburger.

Last but not least, we had the N.Z. Striploin Steak ($29.80). 250g of N.Z. Striploin Steak Char-Grilled to your perfect doneness and served with black pepper sauce or shitake mushroom sauce.

We asked for our steaks to be done medium rare and it turned out perfect, with pretty grilled marks on the surface and the inside still juicy and rare.

Yes, if you are working or staying nearby, or you are having a day out with friends, drop by for their lunch specials, available from Monday to Friday, 12pm to 2pm.

Main course (5 dishes choose 1) + soup/salad & soft drink or tea/coffee = $18++ (U.P $29.80)

You may think this is too ulu for you. But hey, good food are worth searching! I enjoy eating here. Unpretentious, in a nice quite neighbourhood, Blooie’s is simply great for just chilling out over a beer.

Now, can I have one more Beer-butt-chicken? 🙂
