When the team behind Pacamara and Alchemist ventured into a new cafe, we were just as excited as you were. (We are huge fans of Pacamara, if you couldn’t already tell) Just in case you were wondering, the cafe’s layout is not crazy on flora and fauna. But they do have a main outdoor alfresco dining area which has a touch of greenery, if you’re interested. Although their cafe menu resembles that of any other cafe, we were curious to find out if their food were on par or perhaps better.

Baked Egg ($19) it was for us! The tomato-based stew arrived in a little metal pot, along with 3 slices of crunchy toasts. The wet weather that afternoon turned out to be a blessing in disguise; a hearty tomato relish dish packed with chorizo iberico, bacon, baby spinach, feta cheese and an egg was the perfect accompaniment to the heavy rain. It was a pity that the egg was not as runny as it should have been. I love my breads slightly soggy from the tangy rich stew, but if you beg to differ, the side of butter might be a good option.

With the Baked Egg setting the bar, The Corned Beef Hash ($19) did not meat our expectations. Beef? Dry. Potatoes? Under-seasoned. Perhaps the only saving grace which managed to pull the dish together was the hollandaise sauce. Would we order this dish again? Meh, we think no.

No further explanation needed for anyone who has tried the team’s coffee, am I right? We opted for a White Coffee with a Dark Matter blend ($4.50 for 3oz, $5 for 5oz, $5.50 for 7 oz) to go with our brunch. Needless to say, you can expect a smooth and velvety texture with delicate hints of chocolate and hazelnut.

This relatively new cafe can definitely do better, but it seems like a pleasant place to hang out and chill (when the weather isn’t too hot and humid though). Plus, no GST and service charge! After concluding your meal, popping by Epiphyte or Apiary to satisfy your dessert cravings doesn’t sound like a bad idea too.
