Breakfast Hola - interior

I headed down in the late morning and even then, the cafe was relatively packed and was filled with laughter and chatter. For those looking to dig into their range of Thick Slices, Club Sandwiches, Noodles and Rice items, do note that they are only available after 10am.

Breakfast Hola - braised pork rice

Breakfast Hola - pork rice runny yolk

I began my meal with a bowl of their Authentic Taiwanese Braised Pork Rice ($4.80/$6.80). Spotting an over-easy egg lying on the bed of pork and rice, my itchy hands picked a fork up to tear through the yolk, and to my surprise, it was still runny (which I absolutely adore)!

While the pork was well seasoned, it unfortunately fell on the tougher and drier side of things. That said, the egg yolk did moisten the meat a little, and made chewing through it a tad easier. The side of pickled cucumbers added a refreshing touch that complemented the richness of the dish.

Breakfast Hola - grilled pork toast

Another common breakfast item in Taiwan would be toast. The Grilled Pork Meat & Egg Toast ($5.80) sees marinated pork, an over-easy egg, tomato and lettuce sandwiched between two slices of white bread. Here, the pork was packed with flavour and carried with it a tinge of herbaceous spicy note that I’ve never tasted before.

The grilled meat was also tender, and I found myself thoroughly enjoying the chewiness of the bread that paired well with the crunchiness of the vegetable. The runny yolk tied everything together nicely.

This was hands down, my favourite item!

Breakfast Hola - slub sandwich

I also had their recommended Ham & Pork Floss Club Sandwich ($7.90) which saw 4 quarters of layered toast skewered together. My sandwich had pork floss, lettuce, tomato, egg, cucumber and ham. All the components went hand-in-hand and made a perfect blend of sweet and savoury flavours.

This is quite a good item for sharing with your dining companions, as it won’t leave a mess!

Breakfast Hola - egg crepe portrait

Going for something lighter, I opted for an order of their Original Egg Crepe Roll ($4.50). Having only eaten this on one other occasion in Taiwan, I was rather excited to dig into this. The scallions elevated the flavours by adding a pleasant fragrance. The egg folded into the crepe was nicely seasoned but I thought the crepe itself could afford to be thinner and more crispy.

Breakfast Hola - milk toast

Breakfast Hola - tea

I ended off my meal with a Milky Cream Spread Thick Slice ($4.50) that was super crisp on the outside yet warm and fluffy on the inside. It does get a little dry because of the toasted coconut flakes sprinkled on top, so I’d say to pair it with a cup of their Fresh Soy Milk ($2) or their Black Tea Milk ($4.50). Their teas also fall on the thinner side unlike our local Teh so don’t be taken aback!

Breakfast Hola - storefront

Breakfast Hola boasts a relatively extensive food menu so there’s bound to be something for everyone. So, if you’re looking to satisfy your Taiwanese toast craving, this is the place to go.
