As someone who doesn’t own a car, a trip to Dempsey Hill can be quite a daunting one given Singapore’s blistering heat. Add the upscale stores, restaurants, and scores of expensive vehicles around and it feels like a whole other part of Singapore (like Sentosa). But amidst the lush greenery is a spanking new establishment dishing out yummy bakes that don’t threaten the wallet — Burnt Ends Bakery.

If it’s a familiar-sounding name to you, it might be because you’ve heard of the Aussie-style BBQ Michelin-starred restaurant Burnt Ends and yes, they’re related. Previously an online business with the occasional pop-ups, the artisanal bakery is now a brick-and-mortar store in Dempsey.

Many flock to Burnt Ends Bakery for their brioche doughnuts($5 a piece) that come with various fillings such as Lemon Meringue, Coffee Cream, Passionfruit and Nutella. It’s so popular that while I was there, the lady in line behind me cleaned out the rest of the doughnuts on display (RIP to the rest of the poor people in line).

Apart from doughnuts, you can also find pastries, cookies and breads such as Wood Fired Sourdough ($16) and Savoury Forracia ($8). If you’re in need of some caffeine in your system or a beverage to wash your bakes down, they’ve got you covered with choices of coffee, tea or chocolate.

Once you’ve gotten your hands on your purchases, you can either enjoy them at home or at their alfresco seating area. It’s a dog-friendly cafe so don’t be surprised if you’re greeted by a couple of friendly pups!

I decided to indulge myself in four of their brioche doughnuts and picked out Vanilla Cream, Pandan, Milo Dinosaur and their seasonal special, which happened to be Raspberry that day.

Simplicity is best, which explains why the Vanilla Cream was my favourite of the lot. First, let’s talk about the actual brioche doughnut. It was amazingly fluffy on the inside, and coated with sprinkles of sugar on the outside. The Tahitian vanilla cream was smooth and not too sweet so it went hand in hand with the sugar crystals on the doughnut itself.

The seasonal Raspberry was definitely a looker with its ruby-red hued filling. They certainly don’t skimp on the amount of fillings in their doughnuts and the bits of actual raspberry fruit in them was a delectable touch.

The Milo Dinosaur was an exclusive creation made for Singapore Food Festival 2020 and brought back as a permanent item. I liked how the milo cream wasn’t too thick and wasn’t excessively rich. As for the Pandan that came topped with coconut glaze and desiccated coconut, its fragrant pandan cream made for a good match with the pillowy doughnut.

I’ve always needed something savoury to balance out anything sweet and so I opted for the Galette ($8). If you’re dining in, you can request for the staff to heat it up for you. I only learnt that a little too late but nevertheless, the tartness of the sun-dried tomatoes was a refreshing change of pace from the sweet doughnuts. It might be a bit strong for those who lean towards mild flavour profiles though.

The Latte ($5) is brewed with Burnt Ends’ own blend of beans. Expect hints of citrus, plum, milk chocolate and hazelnut. It wasn’t too acidic and definitely went well with their bakes, especially those which were sweet.

Dempsey Hill has always provided a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and Burnt Ends Bakery makes it a whole lot more worth the journey.
