Although I’ve been to Bangkok countless of times, I’ve never really experienced being a backpacker here. I always thought that hostels are usually dirty, run down and highly inaccessible, but I was proven wrong when I visited the Weeping Willow, a quaint hostel along Sukhumvit Soi 26.

The hostel looked very homey and cozy, but what was most alluring was the café located on level one of the hostel. Café MODs is a no-frills café that dishes out affordable fare. Diners can expect dishes such as Barbecued Pork Ribs (450B), Slow-fried Chicken (220B), as well as Thai delicacies, which include the Pad Kra Pao (120B).

I loved how the café served the Pad Kra Pao in a traditional metal tiffin carrier, similar to the tingkats in the olden days. Scoop a big chunk of chicken, and the sauce of course, onto the fluffy steamed rice, before you dig in.

We also tried the Bacon Garlic Spaghetti (150B), which was garnished with a whole twig of green peppercorn. The fried garlic slices, together with dried red chillies, perfumed the dish with a little spice and garlicky aroma, which was quite appetite whetting. However, the paste was a tad overcooked, and the dish could use a little more bacon.

The café also serves up desserts such as Crispy Toasts with Ice Cream (220B) and Homemade Brownie with Ice Cream (135B).

The nice orange lighting and mint green walls at Cafe MODs really grew on me. What a great place to catch up with friends over a cup of coffee!
