Located within Tanjong Pagar Plaza Market & Food Centre, Celebrities Big Prawn Noodle opened early this year in February and often sees long lines during peak hours. To avoid the crowds, I decided to drop by during an off-peak period to check out the hype surrounding one of the more popular stalls in the hawker centre.

So what’s the story behind the prawn noodle stall’s name? David Cai, the proprietor of Celebrities Prawn Noodle, was once in the entertainment industry and had rubbed shoulders with both local and international celebrities. In fact, the front of the stall is adorned with numerous photos of David alongside many big names in the glitzy acting world.

The streamlined menu offers three variations of prawn noodles for you to choose from – Big Prawn Mee ($5/8), Pork Ribs Prawn Mee ($5/8) and Big Prawn Mee with Sliced Abalone ($6/8) – all of which are available in both soup and dry versions.

For my order of Big Prawn Mee, I decided to go for the soup version. My choice of noods were a mix of thin bee hoon and yellow noodles, which came topped with three partially de-shelled prawns split down the middle and a small dollop of fried shallots.

One of the reasons I decided to mix my noodles was because I thought the alkaline taste of the yellow noodles needed to be balanced out but I didn’t have to worry as there was none of that!

The broth gave off an appetising fragrance that made me eager to dig in but, unfortunately, it seemed that taste-wise, the soup was off the mark. The umami and robust flavours of the stock was easily overpowered by excessive hits of saltiness. It was a real shame as the otherwise flavourful broth had real potential.

I also opted for the dry version of the Pork Ribs Prawn Mee with the same bee hoon and yellow noodles combo. After giving the noods a good toss, I was disappointed to find that apart from a mid-level spiciness from the chilli, the noodles did not have much savoury and hearty flavours.

There were two partially de-shelled prawns in this bowl and while it was fairly easy to gain access to the sweet, meaty flesh of the crustacean, it was just a tad disheartening to see that the prawns weren’t properly cleaned.

As for the pork ribs, they weren’t too tough but could stand to be more tender, but that’s just my personal preference. There was also a very strong porky taste that paired well with the soya sauce and cut chilli mix.

A small bowl of soup is given on the side with any order of dry prawn noodles. The broth is a more concentrated version of that in the prawn noodle soup, which means double the flavours, but also double the salt.

Perhaps it was truly an off day for Celebrities Big Prawn Noodle, as the queues during peak hours certainly seem to be a testament to the quality of their noodles. For those keen to head over and give their prawn noodles a whirl, let us know whether it’s a hit or miss for you!
