Centre Satay Bee Hoon @ Ang Mo Kio
When people in Ang Mo Kio crave for satay bee hoon, this is the stall most people visit. I don’t eat satay bee hoon frequently, but among the ones I have tried, Centre Satay Bee Hoon is most memorable one.
Satay bee hoon is a fusion between Chinese and Malay dish, which combines rice vermicelli with kang kong, cuttlefish and drenched in satay sauce (peanut sauce). Mr Tan has been selling this for more than 30 years. He got this recipe for his grandmother who used to sell satay bee hoon in a pushcart.
The essence of all satay bee hoon is definitely the peanut sauce. Made from scratch, the peanuts has to be roasted and grinded before cooking it with other ingredients to get the nutty and flavourful flavour. Very laborious!
Satay bee hoon may seem like a simple dish, but it actually requires lots of skills and experience. From blanching of the ingredients to make sure that they are just cooked, to getting the consistency and flavour of the satay sauce.
The bee hoon here is soft and the cockles, cuttlefish (love the crunch), prawns and pork slices still have bite to them. These ingredients are slathered with generous amount of nutty homemade satay sauce. The thick and rich sauce is very well blended and only mildly spicy. Love it so much that I am able to mop it up with the bee hoon. A plate of satay bee hoon starts from $3.50.
