Chai Chee Cai Tou Guo – Seriously Addictive Carrot Cake Sticks in Bedok North!

Carrot cake sticks are my childhood fave. Not only are they basically carrot cake (which is my favourite hawker dish), they’re super easy to eat. I happened to have plans in the Bedok neighbourhood the other day and when I was looking around for something to eat, Chai Chee Cai Tou Guo caught my attention.

Apart from Carrot Cake Sticks ($2 for 12 pieces), you can also get regular dim sum-style Carrot Cake triangles ($0.50 per piece) and Yam Cake ($0.60 per piece). The uncle fries everything in batches within two minutes so when you see him lowering a fresh grill of carrot cake or yam cake, you’re in luck because they’ll be piping hot and in their best form!

The Carrot Cake Sticks rocked a beautiful golden brown and there was an amazingly satisfying crunch on every piece I bit into. The soft radish interior made a wonderful contrast with the crispy fried exterior. And it wasn’t super oily so I felt a little less guilty over indulging in fried goods. I’ll take them over regular fries any day.

Also, it still retained some of its crunch even after about an hour so you can take them home and enjoy them later.

The Yam Cake might be constantly overshadowed by the carrot cake, but I’d say it’s still worth a try . While it’s not as fragrant or crunchy as the Carrot Cake Sticks, this chunky snack was delightfully soft and had bits of taro wedged into the triangle here and there. The uncle will ask if you want the traditional squares or triangle ones but both tasted equally good!

There might be other stalls closer to home that sell carrot cake sticks, but I would hands-down make the journey all the way to Bedok for Chai Chee Cai Tou Guo because these are really some of the crispiest carrot cake sticks I’ve ever had. Take note that the uncle takes the occasional Monday off to rest and recharge so don’t be too disappointed if you make the trip down and it’s closed.
