Chanterelle cafe is a new cafe that just opened in Sigalp V, a short walk from where Five Oars is now located. You might be delighted to know that it’s also pet friendly!

Their name “Chanterelle” is a tribute to the Chanterelle Restaurant that pioneered fine dining in New York in 1979. It’s interesting because this cafe is not a fine dining restaurant, but I guess the team behind it must’ve been very inspired by the couple who ran the restaurant in NYC.

They only have two items on their mains menu – Eggless Egg Toast ($17.90) and a Salad ($14.90) — which are perfect options for vegans. I had the Eggless Egg Toast, Mixed Nut Acai Bowl ($8.90), Latte ($5) and Nutella Hot Chocolate ($6).

Their coffee was decent for a caffeine fix. They get their beans from Bright Coffee Company. It’s a single-origin Arabica bean that comes from Brazil. It had a roasted aroma in the aftertaste. While it was not overly robust, it gave me a much needed caffeine boost. The highlight of the coffee was the mushroom chip that came with it. The mushroom chip made a genius pairing with the coffee!

The Nutella Hot Chocolate was another drink that is worth trying, especially if you have a sweet tooth or if there are kids in your company. As someone who doesn’t enjoy chocolate-flavoured things as much, I have to say that this cup was on point. It did not have the artificial chocolate syrup taste in it, and the Nutella made the whole experience so much more enjoyable. It was not too sweet as well.

The eggless egg toast was pretty interesting. The three main ingredients in it are alkaline water, almond curd and potato starch. This combination makes everything tastes just like an actual egg. If you were to do a blind taste test, you might just conclude that it’s a real egg.

The toast comes with baby spinach and cherry tomatoes drizzled with sesame sauce. On a sad note, there was only one half of a cherry tomato in the salad… And the avocado was not very ripe making it difficult to ingest.

The sourdough was thick, surprisingly soft and easy to cut through! They also halve the toast beforehand, so you can pick it up with your hands easily. It’s quite a pricey dish but I guess I was paying for a healthy option, and the amazing fact that they actually made “fake egg” taste like real egg. So I guess it was somewhat worth it?

The acai bowl here is pretty legit. The acai mix was smooth and smoother than what the bigger chains out there serve. The toppings in the mixed nut bowl consist of pumpkin seeds, goji berries, granola, dried coconut shavings, chia seeds and banana. It’s decorated with a pretty umbrella too!

Its portion is just right for an after-meal dessert, so don’t expect it to be a filling bowl! They do sell individual scoops of the acai like it’s ice cream. Single scoops are priced at $3.90 and double scoops are $5.90. Toppings are charged separately.

Their cakes are from the famous Bob the Baker Boy which is known for healthier cakes. There’s also a piece of great news for the fans of vegetable chips and especially the mushroom chip that comes with the coffee — Chanterelle sells them in packs of 100g! My colleague got a packet as she was hooked! But it’s going at $10 for 100g… which is quite pricy but I guess healthy and tasty treats warrant a heftier price tag!
