I am honestly not a morning person, but I wake up early just for food — but it has got to be something really good. One of our makan kakis were raving about the fish dumplings at Chao Yang Fishball Noodle (潮阳手工鱼丸粿条面汤), so I travelled to Eunos Crescent Market and Food Centre at 9am for it.

It took about 45 minutes before we got to the front of the queue. The queue moved pretty slowly, but well, good food is always worth the wait right?

A basic bowl of noodles here starts from $3, which is cheaper than any Song Kee outlets. But, it doesn’t come with herh kiao, only slices of fishcakes, fishballs and fish paste-stuffed tau pok.

Just go for the biggest portion where you get to enjoy everything, including those divine handmade herh kiao.

The star was, of course, the fish dumplings (herh keow) which were smooth and slippery. Every bite promised a burst of juices. There was a generous amount of tapioca flour on the fish skin and each dumpling was packed with tasty minced pork, fried garlic and sole fish bits.

To be honest, it tasted somewhat similar to Song Kee Fishball Noodles. True enough, when I went back to Song Kee a few days later to verify, the owners told me that they are relatives and Mr Chua actually spent a week at the stall to help them during the opening.

Each bowl of al dente noodles is tossed with fragrant lard, sambal chilli, vinegar and seasoning. It was a joy to tuck into because every strand of noodles had a lovely bite and was coated in the savoury and spicy sauce which really made it shine. Mee kia seems to be a better choice here.

They are open for business from 5:30am and sell out by lunch time. So be there early yeah!
