We love finding hidden, under-the-radar gems in unassuming coffee shops. A lot of time, these stalls are often just visited by residents in the area because it’s nearby. But you gotta give credit where it’s due and Chuan Cheng Wanton Noodle is definitely deserving of attention, particularly for their roasted meats! They also serve up a decent plate of wanton noodles that’s worth a go.

Come lunchtime, Chuan Cheng Wanton Noodle receives a steady queue of hungry patrons. They offer a mix of rice and noodle dishes on the menu, with roasted meats such as Traditional Roasted Sausage Rice ($3.50), Roasted Pork Noodles ($3.80), Pork Ribs Rice ($4), Roasted Duck Drumstick Noodles ($6.50) and even Combination Platters ($13 for twin, $18 for trio).

For bigger groups looking to share dishes between them, opt for choices like the Roasted Duck ($22 for half, $43 for whole), Char Siew ($43 for 1kg) and Pork Ribs ($43 for 1kg).

I decided to go for a Char Siew Roasted Duck Rice ($5) combo and was given a simple plate of white rice topped with hefty chunks of roasted pork belly and duck meat liberally doused in a sweet, smoky sauce. I usually don’t have too many opinions on duck meat, but Chuan Cheng’s was fairly easy to chew through and the meat was infused with slight herbal notes that paired well with the sweetness of the sauce it was covered with.

The pork belly was definitely the highlight of the meal. The thick layers of meat and fat were crowned with a super crispy layer of crackling that made the entire little slab of meat all the more indulgent. I also feel like I have to give some credit to the fluffy rice that perfectly rounded off the entire meal.

Amongst the roasted meat dishes, there was also the Signature Wanton Noodles ($3.80) so of course, I had to give it a try. Points were definitely given to the noodles that were cooked to perfection – al dente with a good bite. They were tossed in a chilli sauce that was slightly smoky, but I felt the sauce base itself was overshadowed by the flavours of the chilli.

The char siew was sliced rather thickly here and while it was sweet enough, I wished that it was slightly more caramelised to properly balance out the thickness of the meat.

The fried wantons on the plate were quite small in size and the filling was moderately seasoned. The same could be said for the wantons in the soup, with the latter being light on the palate.

While I’d pass on the wanton noodles unless I’m having sudden cravings for it, I would definitely go for the roasted meats at Chuan Cheong Wanton Noodle again. Even now, I can’t stop thinking about the roasted pork and duck!
