Amidst the rows of stalls in Havelock Road Cooked Food Centre stands one stall with a rich history that dates back to the 1960s! And that’s Covent Garden Prawn Noodle, which was established by Mr and Mrs Lee, now an elderly couple.

Mr Lee operated as a “Kok Kok Mee” hawker in the past. He went around hitting bamboo with a stick to draw attention to his prawn noodles. The couple relocated their stall several times before settling down at their current location in 2017. Recently, Ms Yim took over the business under the watchful guidance of Mr Lee to carry on the couple’s legacy.

When I arrived in the morning, there were already three people in the queue. Besides the usual prawn noodle ingredients of prawns, meat slices, and fish cake, the stall also offers pig intestine and pig skin.

The Prawn Noodle with Pig Intestine Dry (粉肠虾面) ($7) comes with a bowl of soup and generous amounts of fresh prawns, pig intestines, pig skin, sliced meat slices, fish cake and a sprinkling of fried shallots. The pig intestine, which came in thick cuts, were well-cleaned and were firm and chewy. Unfortunately, I found the prawns a tad mushy.

I found the prawn broth to be somewhat light in flavour, but it went well with the ingredients. The pig skin was a unique addition hat was rich in collagen. I opted for mee pok, and the noodles were springy and were evenly coated in the sauce.

Next, I tried the Small 小 Soup ($3.50), which came with smaller shrimps, meat slices, fish cakes, and fried pork lard. The yellow noodles were starchy, and could have been more springy.

If you’re looking for a homey bowl of prawn noodles with a rich history, Covent Garden Prawn Noodle might be right up your alley!
