Da Jie Famous Wanton Noodle – You Must Try Their Braised Chicken Feet!
Da Jie Famous Wanton Noodle needs no introduction. This queen of wanton mee at Jalan Besar is a hot favourite amongst many foodies.
Ashamed of myself for not visiting the place earlier, I finally had lunch here with the makan guru one afternoon. Lady boss Linda Heng is very friendly. She has been serving up tasty wanton noodles for years. But you know what, the highlight here is the braised chicken feet.
To be honest, I am not a big fan of chicken feet because when I was a kid, my grandmother always told me not to eat them. Growing up, I probably had a few here and there but there is nothing really impressive (and I still feel squeamish about it). My lunch at Da Jie Wanton Mee was a breakthrough because the guru ordered a plate of chicken feet and I finished half of it.
The braised chicken feet and mushrooms are stewed till soft. They are marinated with honey before they are sent to the deep-fryer. Lastly, they are braised with oyster sauce gently so the skin doesn’t break. It’s slippery and gelatinous. I think I can easily finish a bowl of rice with that sauce.
The special egg noodles are soft and springy! Cooked al dente with a distinct egg flavour, they are tossed with sambal and black sauce. I piled on a spoonful of lard and I just couldn’t stop eating them. SHIOK!
Using pork collar, the char siew was decent but I prefer something fattier. We had the fried and soup wantons which were filled with a generous portion of meat. I am definitely gonna be back for another plate of wanton mee with braised chicken feet soon!
