Director of Porridge (粥董) – Not Referring to Jay Chou but the Director of Porridge!

Located in a super old-school coffee shop at Jalan Benaan Kapal is the Director of Porridge. They have a very punny name in Mandarin, 粥董 (zhou dong), which is a great way for people to remember them as it reminds one of Jay Chou’s nickname, 周董.

I asked the uncle if his surname was Zhou, but he said his surname was Wu. Oh man. It would have been perfect if his surname was Zhou! Uncle Wu and his son, who came up with the stall name started this stall just about a month ago.

Here at Zhou Dong, there’s only two items on the menu — Pork Century Egg Porridge ($3) and Chee Cheong Fun with Yam Cake ($2). Both items make a simple and no-frills breakfast no matter what day it is.

Since they’re the Director of Porridge, we had to have a taste of their porridge naturally! The porridge comes with half a youtiao (fried dough fritter), stuck right into the porridge.

The taste of the century egg in the porridge was super strong, but in a good way. They also offer soya sauce and pepper for you to season your porridge accordingly. I thought that the century egg taste was good enough seasoning for me, so I didn’t add in anything else. The youtiao was not too tough, and I was glad that I had that to go with the porridge. However, the consistency of the porridge was not the smoothest, and it barely had any pork slices in the porridge. But for $3, I think that this was a decent meal.

The Chee Cheong Fun and Yam Cakes, on the other hand, were a little disappointing. Both items were cut into cubes and drizzled with sweet sauce and sprinkled with spring onions and sesame seeds.

The chee cheong fun was too hard, and it was almost a perfect cube if not for the folds between the layers. The yam cake was slightly softer than the chee cheong fun. It was obvious that both items were procured from suppliers and then just prepared and sold. I think that it’s acceptable for most people as a breakfast meal. As for me, I prefer the porridge over the chee cheong fun.

It seems that the kopitiam that Director of Porridge sits in has many other stalls selling delicious breakfast food, so I would definitely be back for breakfast, or the century egg porridge from Director of Porridge, after a morning run someday!
