Hidden in a corner of Thomson Plaza is a charming cafe. Step in, and you will instantly be transported out of Singapore, to a rural countryside. The cafe plays soothing music, and its rustic woody interior reminds me of a cosy little house.

Dumplings Cafe is a Chinese cafe opened approximately 3 months ago. They serve both a breakfast menu (8.30am to 11am) and an all-day menu. Of course, dumplings are their signature item.

During my first visit to Dumplings Cafe, I observed the owner standing behind the bar, folding the dumplings with tender, loving care. Handmade in-house, the dumplings come in 5 different colours – white, green, orange, yellow and violet. The white dumplings contain pork and prawn, the violet dumplings contain beef, etcetera. For those undecided on which flavours to get, the Dumplings Platter is a good option. It comes with 2 dumplings of each flavour. These dumplings are served with homemade chilli, and mala lovers would definitely appreciate its slightly numbing sensation.

While I appreciated their lovely colours, the tastes between the different dumpling flavours were hardly discernible. They were not particularly flavoursome, except for the orange dumplings which had a strong mala taste. Looking at their wholesome menu, I was wondering if it’s because these dumplings were meant to taste healthy?

We also tried the hot Lavender Latte ($5.50). However, the lack of lavender notes was slightly disappointing.

Lastly, we ordered the Teriyaki Chicken Rice, which was flavourful and satisfying. What I liked most about it was that the teriyaki chicken was really tasty, yet not too sweet. The teriyaki flavour did not completely overpower the tender, grilled chicken. Additionally, a medley of roasted mushroom, and bell peppers brightened up the dish and gave it some cheer. Dumplings Cafe mixes white rice with brown rice, which not only gives the rice texture, but the mixture is also a hit with the more health-conscious crowd

Overall, Dumplings Cafe is a decent place for a restful escape from the stresses of life. It has a certain homey and rustic charm, and its menu has some pretty healthy options. Those who enjoy lighter-tasting and healthier alternatives will definitely take a liking to this little cafe.
