With more than 2000 shops, Platinum Fashion Mall, is heavily patronized by Singaporeans. I am not a shopaholic, believe it or not, I get a headache when I am in Platinum because there are just too many shops to look at. While my friends shop in Platinum, I hunt for good food around the mall. Here are some of my favourites.

For really tasty and authentic Thai beef noodle soup, you have to track down to Phetchaburi 27 Alley (10 minutes walk from Platinum Mall). The owner tosses the bowl and cooks in a quick rhythmic movement. It’s a joy to stand there and watch him prepare bowls and bowls of beef soup filled with clean and fresh offal, tender beef and rich broth. The taste test lies in the soup which is boiled over long hours to give a well rounded flavours. It’s aromatic, beef yet light on the palate. You can choose to have rice to go with your soup, or have it with kway teow. My recommendation is to go for the soup and rice version as you get a more intense flavour. Each bowl of beef soup has got sliced beef, bouncy beef meatballs, beef tendon, bean sprouts and chopped spring onions. Open from 11am to 8pm, closed every Sunday. Look out for Miss Tam Chiak’s certificate when you are there!

Boat noodles were sold in river canals in the past. The most well known boat noodles is Victory Monument. But it is a distance away from Platinum Mall. If you are craving for it, Lung Prathunam serves fairly decent one and it is located beside the river canal at Phetchaburi Road! Near to the pig trotter rice, we walk past the bridge, climbed down the stairs to find this boat noodles. Despite the hot weather, you will see the place filled with foodies chomping and slurping their way through the boat noodles bowl after bowl. Lung Prathunam has been selling boat noodles for closed to 40 years. Now run by the second generation Sukanya, they added PIG’s BLOOD into the broth, making it so rich and thick. Add some fried lard and pig’s skin, we are ready to feast!

After changing money at SuperRich Thailand opposite Platinum Mall, we checked out this pig trotter rice next to it (the blue SuperRich). Opened by Mr Tang more than 20 years ago, he learnt the skill from his friend who has been in this trade for more than 60 years. Even though Mr Tang is in his 60s, he looks so youthful and he attributes it to his diet: 1 trotter a day. Coincidentally, his son Joe used to work in Singapore as an architect for 3 years before coming back recently to take care of the family.

Everyday, he prepares about 50 trotters for his 2 shops (the other outlet in BigC food court). His pig trotter is so tender and it soaks up the braising sauce really well. Using more than 10 ingredients and cook for at least 3 hours, the braising liquid is aromatic with a moderate thickness. You have the option of getting a plate of pig trotter rice with a bowl of bitter gourd soup at 90 baht (approx S$4). We were lucky enough to try their intestines which is cleaned meticulously and sold out really quickly. This is a true hidden gem! Good news is, it’s really near Platinum Mall! We love it so much that we re-visited them on our last day in Bangkok. Opens from 8am to 5pm, closed every Sundays.

Let me put it this way. I never like Bangkok’s chicken rice because it cannot fight with our Hainanese chicken rice, in my opinion. But if I was craving for a decent plate of Khao Man Gai (Thai style chicken and rice) in Bangkok, this is the place I would visit. Plus it is cheap, you can get your plate of chicken rice for less than $2? Or wait, is it $1? Kaiton Pratunam Chicken Rice has got really plump and juicy boiled chicken in the shop. The rice was cooked in chicken broth and chicken fat, it’s not as oily and in fact a little mild for me. But when paired with the tender chicken pieces, it is screaming with chicken-ey goodness. Here’s a tip, go early because their business is sooo good that they run out of food pretty fast. Opens from 5.30am – 3pm and 5pm – 3am.

You must be thinking, why is this food writer introducing food court? Honestly, Platinum Mall’s food court on the 6th floor has got some of the city’s best dishes because they invited some of the famous hawkers to set up a stall here. Clean and air-conditioned, it is swamped by locals and tourists. Sometimes, it gets so busy that you have to hunt for an open table. Even though most of the stalls serve good Thai food, there is a handful of Japanese, Malaysian, Vietnamese, and Chinese stalls as well. Our favourite? Well the crispy Thai omelette is cooked till golden brown and crispy. You then have a choice of prawns, mussels or oysters. And you can add as much bean sprouts as possible to soak up the grease. Don’t forget the dipping sauce as well. I like the som tam too, which has a balance of the sweetness, saltiness and punchiness. End your meal with the piping hot custard puff. The smooth and silky custard fill the soft shell which leads to ecstasy.
