The days leading up to Chinese New Year is the busiest period for many of us. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not the stressful kind of busy, but it’s more of an enjoyable busy.

Families start by spring cleaning their home, and then getting new outfits to usher in the new year. Then, the planning for a reunion dinner starts. Be it amongst our parents and children, or with extended family members, hosting and planning for a reunion dinner isn’t an easy feat.

If you’re dining out, there’s the need to book days – or even months – in advance. It’s going to be even tougher if you’re cooking at home. Getting the freshest ingredients, preparing them, and the actual execution.

Have some fun, and shake it off like Taylor Swift, while making your own DIY Signature Peranakan Laksa! Start by blanching your own noodles, before customizing your own laksa – more fish cake, more laksa leaves, no bean sprouts. Finally, ladle a generous serving of the rich, creamy and spicy laksa broth over your very own picks!

I loved how there were so many seafood dishes included in the buffet spread. The Half Shell Scallop with Garlic & Tang Hoon isn’t a common dish you find among home delivery buffets. The fresh and sweet scallops are a real delicacy at any dinner table, and tastes so good with the garlicky flavours that complement the sweetness of the scallops!

Fish is a must-have during reunion dinners, simply because of the famous Chinese idiom ‘Nian Nian You Yu’. Elsie’s Kitchen serves up a WHOLE PIECE of Crispy Soon Hock with Spicy Fruity Sauce instead of the usual sliced fish! Everyone gets to pick their favourite part of the fish – be it the head, tail or the firm and flaky flesh – and savour it with your loved ones!

The addition of gingko nuts in the Eight Treasure Lou Han Chai makes the dish so much more attractive. This dish lives up to its grand name, and isn’t just your normal vegetable stir-fry. Together with vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, carrots and mushrooms, it makes for a wholesome dish that is bound to be a hit with guests.
