Fried Kway Teow @ 724 AMK – A Sinful Indulgence of Char Kway Teow (Confirm Got Wok Hei!)

There are many famous stalls in popular hawker centres such as Old Airport Road Food Centre and Hong Lim Complex dishing out Char kway teow, a local favourite. Now, there’s an underrated char kway teow stall in Ang Mo Kio that you should totally visit. The CKT here won my heart with its ample smokiness and flavours, and the stall goes by a simple name — Fried Kway Teow.

Known to be a hidden gem amongst residents in the area, the stall has been in operation for almost 40 years and it’s the only char kway teow place that has withstood the test of time in the area. Even after arriving right on the dot at 10.30am according to their opening hours, I was met with a steady line which continued to grow as I waited in line.

You won’t be waiting for long though, as the uncle is quite brisk when it comes to firing up the wok and the auntie goes down the line to take orders from those in the queue. You can either opt for the small portion at $4 or the large one at $5.

The char kway teow was a heavenly aromatic mess of noodles, fish cake slices, beansprouts and pork lard with a couple of hum (cockles) thrown into the mix. This stall’s version definitely leaned more towards the wet side but not overwhelmingly so. The rice noodles and yellow noodles, which were nicely stir-fried, were lusciously soft in texture and well-coated in the dark soy sauce.

An intense smoky flavour beautifully melded with the sweetness of the soy sauce. I requested for chilli to be added into my order and I felt that the spiciness was just right. I also loved how it was pleasantly eggy. There were certain bits that were charred but not in an unpleasant way.

Dig through the plate and you’ll find large, chunky pieces of pork lard that were crispy and fried to perfection (yay to sinful indulgence). I was slightly disappointed to only find about two tiny pieces of cockles. Perhaps the $5 version would yield a larger number of these treasures?

I can safely say that this is one of the best char kway teow I’ve had, and the execution of flavours is hard to beat. It might be a tad oily for some folks, and the amount of ingredients might seem little, but this sinful meal is definitely still worth the calories!
