Yuhua Village Market and Food Centre is home to many delicious dishes that make for good meals any time of the day. Popular stalls include Fei Fei Roasted Noodle, 139 Hainan Chicken Rice and Seng Huat Homemade Carrot Cake. Speaking of carrot cake, there is another lesser-known stall in the hawker centre that is slightly quieter but sees its share of constant regulars, and that’s Golden Star Homemade Carrot Cake.

The couple behind the business has been manning the stall for over ten years, and they sell both black and white carrot cake at either $2.50 or $3. Their radish cakes are all diligently made from scratch and steamed before being fried with plenty of eggs, garlic and chye poh (preserved radish). While the auntie was very camera-shy, she had a friendly demeanour and displayed even more of that with her regulars who have been buying her carrot cake everyday.

The white carrot cake was very eggy and came with a good amount of chye poh  There wasn’t much wok hei to be found in the white version, but there was certainly plenty of flavour in this fragrant dish! The chilli was on the sweeter side and while there was a tinge of spiciness, it didn’t bring much heat with it. A shame, since I’m one of those who usually requests for extra chilli with my carrot cake.

Something also felt missing and I realised Golden Star Homemade Carrot Cake doesn’t sprinkle scallions on their carrot cake. It didn’t make a dramatic difference though; just a little something I observed.

As for the black carrot cake, I’d recommend using a spoon when tucking into it as the radish cakes are a lot smaller compared to the ones in the white version. A generous amount of dark sauce was used and while it wasn’t very eggy, the fragrance of wok hei was a lot more prominent. While the flavours were pretty good, I can’t say I’m much of a fan of the size of the radish cakes, as I would have preferred them to be chunkier.

This is definitely one of the more underrated stalls in Yuhua Village Market and Food Centre that deserves more attention, so do pop by for breakfast or lunch when you’re in the neighbourhood!
