Keisuke Takeda expands his empire into gyoza with the opening of Gyoza King in Orchid Hotel. Located just a few units away from Tonkotsu King, this tiny restaurant can only house 18 pax. I went there on the 10th day of operation and it was already packed! People started queuing as early as 5.45pm!

Gyoza King

Gyoza King features an entire menu of gyoza. Gyoza King offers set meals at $13.90. Ordering is done very systematically. First you pick what type of gyoza you want. They have 3 types of gyozas – prawns, pork or chicken. Then, you pick the rice portion, soup flavours and 2 side dishes. The glistening Niigata Koshihikari rice is made with top-of-the-line rice cookers from Japan.

I consider gyoza more of a side dish to complement my main course such as ramen of don. But at Gyoza King, gyoza is in the limelight and served as the main course. The juicy handmade dumplings are stuffed with shrimp, pork and all sorts of vegetable combinations. They are packed full of flavor in its filling, that are skilfully pan-fried to be deliciously crisp on one side yet tantalisingly moist within. Pork gyoza is their top seller but I prefer the prawn gyozas which is lighters but still flavourful. Giving it a bit more life is the vinegar. Absolutely satisfying.

The side dishes are cooked ala minute so you don’t have to worry about having any cold dishes. We tried all the side dishes with friends and I particularly love Chicken Nanban with tartar sauce. Not because it sounds vulgar, but because the fried chicken is well marinated with a sweet, sour and slightly spicy sauce and topped with a generous dollop of Japanese style Tartar.

Although I am not a big fan of brinjal but stir fried egg plant with miso was not bad. It is aromatic and flavorful, which absorbs the flavours from the miso totally. For something safe, can try the deep fried tofu with minced meat gravy and stir fried egg with tomatoes.

Gyoza King

Sick of sushi or ramen? Then Gyoza King is more than worth a try. It serves it all quick and without the big price tags. But the restaurant is always busy and the place is really small. So be prepared to wait for a table.
