Hakka cuisine has always been loved in Singapore for its ability to be both delicious and comforting at the same time. Amongst them, yong tau foo is one that definitely hits the spot and Hakka Taste SG 客家味 combines that with a slew of tasty dishes such as bak chor mee and tau kee! Located in a quaint coffee shop in Ang Mo Kio Ave 5, this newest kid on the block is here to bring a taste of Malaysia to the folks in Singapore.

The original brand of Hakka Taste comes from Batu Pahat in Malaysia and was started by Hakka Malaysian Fico’s grandfather in 1960. Their handmade recipes have been passed down through three generations since then and Fico (pictured in the middle) decided to take the step to open their very first Singapore-based outlet.

All ingredients are freshly made every morning right here in Singapore — from the mix of fish paste and pork used in their yong tau foo ingredients and meatballs, to their handmade noodles. The latter is made according to an age-old recipe and used to be painstakingly made by hand. They’re now made by machines so a greater quantity can be produced, but Fico ensures that the quality remains the same.

You can’t go wrong with their Signature Set ($5.30) that comes with a bowl of bak chor mee, two pieces of tau kee and three meatballs. You can also opt for the Meatball Set ($5.50) or Taukee Set ($5.70) if you’re craving specifics, or tuck into heartwarming bowls such as the Bee Hoon Soup Set ($4.30) and Kuey Tiaw Soup Set ($4.30).

When it comes to the bak chor mee, you can jazz up the flavours by mixing in different sauces, such as vinegar and chilli sauce, from their condiment station.

Splash out on the Premium Set ($7) and tuck into a bowl of bak chor mee that sees chewy handmade noodles topped with a handful of fragrant minced pork and spring onions, along with one tau po and a separate bowl holding three pieces of tau kee and five handmade meatballs. If you enjoy very simple flavours, feel free to eat the noodles on their own but we definitely recommend adding some condiments in!

The fish paste in the fried tau po was pleasantly meaty and had just a slight crisp on the outer layer that made it very yummy. Take things up a notch by dipping it into the smoky sweet sauce that you can find at the condiment table!

We also tried the Meatball Set ($5.50) because after tasting the meatballs, we agree that the more, the better. The set comes with eight of these meaty morsels, each one bearing a firm texture that gives  a good bite and is wonderfully seasoned.

For our bak chor mee here, we added in chilli sauce and vinegar.  After giving the noods a good toss, slurp them up for a spicy heat combined with the sharp tang from the vinegar. Should you be unsure of what condiments to choose, these two are top choices that you can’t go wrong with.

Folks who really have a love for tau kee can have their absolute fill with the Tau Kee Platter ($8). It comes with eight of these deep-fried savoury goodness and is a good snack to munch on. Whether you’re enjoying it on its own or soaking it into the broth, the results are equally delicious.

You can also opt to add in classic yong tau foo ($0.80 per piece) to your bowl of soup. The paste that they use to stuff the veggies are made from a combination of fish paste and pork using an original recipe. We love how well they go with the chillies and eggplant!

Of course, we didn’t forget about the soup which is definitely a highlight of Hakka Taste SG 客家味. The crystal-clear broth was amazingly flavourful and full-bodied yet light on the palate at the same time, making it super easy to fully enjoy this addictive soup.

Rain or shine, whether you prefer something light or a little heavier for a satisfying meal, the flavours of Hakka Taste SG 客家味 will hit all the right spots.
